Milan Courthouse
The Milan Courthouse () is a judicial complex located in the Porta Vittoria district of Milan, Italy. History The concept of constructing a new courthouse in Porta Vittoria to replace the seven small and outdated judicial offices then existing in Milan was initially proposed in 1925. In 1931, architect Marcello Piacentini was appointed to oversee the project. In collaboration with architect Ernesto Rapisardi, Piacentini designed and supervised the construction of the new courthouse, which was ultimated in July 1940. Description The building is an imposing structure situated on a centrally located site, conceived as a unified edifice housing three distinct judicial institutions: the Court of Appeal (''Corte d'Appello''), the Court (''Tribunale''), and the Magistrates Court (''Pretura''). Marcello Piacentini
Marcello Piacentini (8 December 188119 May 1960) was an Italian people, Italian urban theorist and one of the main proponents of Italian Fascist architecture. Biography Early career Born in Rome, he was the son of architect Pio Piacentini. He studied architecture at the Regio Istituto di Belle Arti, Rome, from 1901 to 1904 and completed his training with his father, with whom he produced a competition entry design (1903) for the National Central Library (Florence), National Central Library, Florence. Ernesto Rapisardi
Ernesto Rapisardi (14 February 1897 – 16 September 1972) was an Italian architect and engineer. Life and career Born in Syracuse, Sicily, the younger brother of Gaetano Rapisardi, he attended the local Arts and Technical School and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts of Rome in 1921. He registered with the Rome Architects' Order on 20 March 1928. Subsequently, he registered with the Milan Architects' Order on 15 September 1965. In 1926, Rapisardi worked on the Villa Fogaccia in Rome, one of his earliest works. In the same period, he designed the interiors of the Casa Madre del Mutilato, by architect Marcello Piacentini. Porta Vittoria
Porta Vittoria (formerly Porta Tosa) was a city gate in the Spanish walls of Milan, Italy. While the walls and the gate have been demolished, the name "Porta Vittoria" has remained to refer to the district ("quartiere") where the gate used to be. This district is part of the Zone 4 administrative division of Milan. History Porta Tosa was the eastern gate of the Spanish walls of Milan, dating back to the 16th century. During the Five Days of Milan, Porta Tosa was the first to be conquered by the Milanese rebels, on 22 March 1848 (an event known as "The Battle of Porta Tosa"). In 1861, when the Italian unification was completed, the gate was renamed "Porta Vittoria" (Victory Gate) after that victorious episode. Relief is a sculptural method in which the sculpted pieces remain attached to a solid background of the same material. The term ''relief'' is from the Latin verb , to raise (). To create a sculpture in relief is to give the impression that the sculpted material has been raised above the background plane. When a relief is carved into a flat surface of stone (relief sculpture) or wood ( relief carving), the field is actually lowered, leaving the unsculpted areas seeming higher. Fausto Melotti (1901–1986) was an Italian sculptor, ceramicist, poet, and theorist. Life Fausto Melotti was born in the city of Rovereto, a city just east of Lake Garda in northeastern Italy in 1901. He had a sister, Renata Melotti, who was also an artist―Renata married the architect Gino Pollini. During the First World War, his family fled intense fighting in the Alpine region and moved to Florence. Carlo Carrà (; February 11, 1881 – April 13, 1966) was an Italian painter and a leading figure of the Futurist movement that flourished in Italy during the beginning of the 20th century. Romano Romanelli
Romano Romanelli (14 May 1882 – 25 September 1968) was an Italian artist, writer, and naval officer, known for his sculptures and his medals. Romanelli was born in Florence, the son of sculptor Raffaello Romanelli.
