Mike Short
Michael John Short CBE FREng FIET (born 19 July 1953) is a British telecommunications engineer and businessman. He helped to get the mobile telecommunications industry off the ground in the UK, when head of technology at Cellnet, and since 2017 has been Chief Scientific Adviser at the Department for International Trade (DIT). Early life He was born in Surrey. He lived abroad and attended several foreign schools, including a French secondary school (he speaks fluent French) and later at Vyners Grammar School in west London (former Middlesex). Due to changing schools, he did not achieve the O-levels that he required to study Physics and Double Maths at A-level, so he had to choose Pure and Applied Maths, Economics and Geography. Fellowship of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) is an award and fellowship for engineers who are recognised by the Royal Academy of Engineering as being the best and brightest engineers, inventors and technologists in the UK and from around the world to promote excellence in engineering and to enhance and support engineering research, policy formation, education and entrepreneurship and other activities that advance and enrich engineering in all its forms. Peter Anthony Erskine (born 10 November 1951) is a businessman and a former Chief Executive of O2 (which he helped to create in 2001). Early life Erskine was born in south-west Essex. His father worked for Tate & Lyle. Erskine attended Churchfields Junior School and later Bancroft's School in north-east London. He studied Psychology at the University of Liverpool, graduating in 1973. Career In 1990 he joined Unitel (now known as Allstream Inc.). BT Cellnet In 1998 he became Managing Director of BT Cellnet, the fledgling mobile phone network company of BT Group. O2 In the formation of O2 in 2001, he became the first Chief Executive.
