Mike Hampson
Michael John Hampson (born 26 July 1973) is a former motorcycle speedway rider from England. Biography Hampson, born in Ashton-under-Lyne, began his British leagues career riding for Belle Vue Aces during the 1990 British League season after being called up following team injury problems at the Manchester club. He continued to ride for the Belle Vue Colts in 1991 and 1992, becoming their captain in the process. In 1993, he secured a loan deal to ride for Long Eaton Invaders, where he impressed, posting a 5.68 average in his first season with them. After racing for the Invaders during 1994 he signed for the 1995 season but switched to join the Sheffield Tigers when the opportunity to ride in the highest division (the 1995 Premier League speedway season) surfaced. Ashton-under-Lyne
Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town in Tameside, Greater Manchester, England. The population was 45,198 at the 2011 census. Historically in Lancashire, it is on the north bank of the River Tame, in the foothills of the Pennines, east of Manchester. Evidence of Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Viking activity has been discovered in Ashton-under-Lyne. The "Ashton" part of the town's name probably dates from the Anglo-Saxon period, and derives from Old English meaning "settlement by ash trees". The origin of the "under-Lyne" suffix is less clear; it possibly derives from the Brittonic-originating word ''lemo'' meaning elm or from Ashton's proximity to the Pennines. The 1995 Premier League (speedway), Premier League season was the 61st season of the top tier of Motorcycle speedway, speedway in the United Kingdom. It was also the first for the new league, and the first of two seasons in which British speedway was competed as a single division. Summary The gulf in quality of teams was highlighted because of the merging of the two leagues, with Eastbourne Eagles winning the title 56 points clear of bottom club Exeter Falcons. 1996 Premier League Speedway Season
The 1996 Premier League season was the 62nd season of the top tier of speedway in the United Kingdom. It was also the second and last edition of two seasons, in which British speedway was competed as a single division. In addition there was a Conference League. As from 1997 the Elite League would be the top division and the Premier League would be the second division. Summary The one league set up only lasted for a second season due to the huge disparity between the sides. Wolverhampton Wolves won the title for the second time in six years, with American Ronnie Correy being the sole survivor of the 1991 winning team. In a strange coincidence a new set of two brothers helped Wolves win the title, back in 1991 it was the Ermolenko brothers but now it was the Swedish Karlsson brothers. The National League Riders' Championship is an annual motorcycle speedway contest between the top riders (or two riders) with the highest average points total from each club competing in the third tier league in the United Kingdom. The 1995 Academy League was the second tier/division of British speedway. It was effectively the same division of teams that had competed in the 1994 British League Division 3 but was renamed because the British League Division 1 and 2 had merged. Summary The title was won by Berwick Bandits who had also won the previous season's Division 3 title. Final league table Cleveland Bays withdrew. Academy League Knockout Cup The 1995 Academy League Knockout Cup was the 28th edition of the Knockout Cup for tier two teams. It was only the tier two competition because the Division 1 & 2 had merged, this meant that the newly formed Academy League was tier two of British speedway at the time. Belle Vue Colts
The Belle Vue Colts are the junior youth development team of the Belle Vue Aces, one of the World's most famous motorcycle speedway team, based in Manchester in the northwest of England. History Belle Vue first operated a reserve team during the 1934 Speedway National League which finished 6th in the league table. Three years later in the 1937 Provincial Speedway League the Belle Vue reserve side took over the fixtures of Liverpool Merseysiders and in the 1939 Speedway National League Division Two the Belle Vue reserves replaced Stoke Potters. In the mid-1950s Belle Vue ran a few "second" team events when the Aces were away from home. The Belle Vue Colts side was formed by former Aces rider Dent Oliver, who became General Manager of Belle Vue Aces in 1967. Belle Vue Aces
The Belle Vue Aces are a British speedway club, based in Manchester. The club hold the record of having won the top tier League championship 13 times. They currently compete in the SGB Premiership, racing at The National Speedway Stadium, with home matches usually taking place on Monday evenings. They also run a second team in the National Development League, known as the Belle Vue Colts. History Racing first took place in 1928 at the Belle Vue greyhound stadium in Kirkmanshulme Lane before moving the following year to a specially built stadium nearby on Hyde Road.
