Mike Gonzalez (historian)
Mike Gonzalez (born 1943) is a British historian and literary critic who was Professor of Latin American Studies in the Hispanics Department of the University of Glasgow. He has written widely on Latin America, especially Cuba and the Cuban Revolution of 1959. He characterizes Cuba as a state-capitalist economy rather than socialist. A long-time member of the British Socialist Workers Party, he testified in Tommy Sheridan's defence at the Sheridan defamation trial and HM Advocate v Sheridan and Sheridan. Gonzalez is also a member of Solidarity – Scotland's Socialist Movement, the party Sheridan formed after the split in the Scottish Socialist Party. Alex Callinicos
Alexander Theodore Callinicos (born 24 July 1950) is a Rhodesian-born British political theorist and activist. An adherent of Trotskyism, he is a member of the Central Committee of the Socialist Workers Party (SWP) and serves as its International Secretary. Between 2009 and 2020 he was the editor of ''International Socialism'', the SWP's theoretical journal, and has published a number of books. Solidarity – Scotland's Socialist Movement was a List of political parties in Scotland, political party in Scotland. The party launched on 3 September 2006, founded by two former Scottish Socialist Party MSPs, Tommy Sheridan and Rosemary Byrne, in the aftermath of Sheridan's Sheridan v News International, libel action. On 23 December 2010, Sheridan was convicted of perjury during the 2006 defamation action, and sentenced to three years imprisonment on 26 January 2011. Solidarity performed poorly in the 2011 Scottish Parliament election, achieving only 2,837 votes or 0.14% of the overall regional list vote. Solidarity formally ended its existence as a political party in December 2021, giving its support to the Alba Party instead. ''Sheridan v News Group Newspapers'' (''Thomas Sheridan v News Group Newspapers Ltd'') is a civil court case brought by Tommy Sheridan against the publishers of the ''News of the World'', which began in the Court of Session in Edinburgh, Scotland, on 4 July 2006.
