Mike and Ike is an American brand of fruit-flavored candies that were first introduced in 1940 by American company Just Born. Despite conjecture, the origin of the candy's name remains unknown. History Mike and Ike is located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. People have claimed that the name may have come from the comic strip Mike and Ike (They Look Alike), which had ended by the 1940s. People also claimed the name may have referred to the popular 1930's National Champion Air Race winning aircraft "Mike" and "Ike" built by Benny Howard and flown by Harold Neumann. Just Born, Inc., is an American family-owned confectionery company based in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. It manufactures and markets a number of confectionery, including Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, Hot Tamales, Mike and Ike, Peeps, Teenee Beanee jelly beans, and Zours. Advertising its products with the slogan "a great candy isn't made... it's Just Born," the company was ranked as the 10th largest candy company in the United States, as of 2013. History Russian-Jewish immigrant Sam Born (1891–1959) came to the United States in December 1909. Hot Tamales
Hot Tamales is an American brand of cinnamon-flavored candies manufactured and marketed by the Just Born company. Introduced in 1950, they were developed by Bob Born, son of Sam Born, the company's founder. The name derives from the sometimes spicy flavor of tamales. It was the top-selling cinnamon candy in 1999. Variations In 2011, Just Born released ''Hot Tamales 3 ALARM'' containing a mix of three candies: orange (hot), pinkish (hotter) and dark red (hottest). Around this time, Just Born also marketed ''Hot Tamales Fire'' (originally ''Super Hot Hot Tamales'') with a hotter flavor and darker color. In 2014, Just Born released ''Hot Tamales Tropical Heat'' that contains three candies, combining the original pungent, spicy flavor with lemon, mango and pineapple flavor.
