Mihály Nyilas
Mihály Nyilas ( sr-cyr, Михаљ Њилаш, Mihalj Njilaš; born 14 January 1962) is an ethnic Hungarians in Serbia, Hungarian politician in Serbia. He was the mayor and Kanjiža from 2008 to 2014 and was a deputy prime minister of Vojvodina from 2014 to 2020. He is now a secretary of state in Serbia's Ministry of Justice (Serbia), ministry of justice. Nyilas is a member of the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians (''Vajdasági Magyar Szövetség'', VMSZ). Early life and career Nyilas was born in the village of Orom (Kanjiža), Orom in Kanjiža, Socialist Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, in what was then the People's Republic of Serbia in the Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia. Hungarians ( hu, Szerbiai magyarok, sr, Мађари у Србији, Mađari u Srbiji) are the second-largest ethnic group in Serbia. According to the 2011 census, there are 253,899 ethnic Hungarians composing 3.5% of the population of Serbia. The vast majority of them live in the northern autonomous province of Vojvodina, where they number 251,136 or 13% of the province's population, and almost 99% of all Hungarians in Serbia. Most Hungarians in Serbia are Roman Catholics by faith, while smaller numbers of them are Protestant (mostly Calvinist). Hungarian is listed as one of the six official languages of the Vojvodina, an autonomous province that traditionally fosters multilingualism, multiculturalism and multiconfessionalism. The Serbian Progressive Party ( sr-cyrl, Српска напредна странка, Srpska napredna stranka, SNS) has been the ruling political party of Serbia since 2012. Founded by Tomislav Nikolić and Aleksandar Vučić in 2008 as a split from the far-right Serbian Radical Party (SRS), the SNS served in opposition to the Democratic Party (DS) for the next several years.
