Mien Van Bree (1915-1983)
Wilhelmina Elizabeth (Mien) van Bree (24 April 1915 – 4 August 1983) was a Dutch cyclist. She is considered a pioneer of women's cycling in the Netherlands. Early years Van Bree was the fourth of five children in a horticultural family, the daughter of Adrianus van Bree (1878–1959) and Elizabeth Hendrika van Beek (1884–1952). She grew up in the Tramstraat, in Loosduinen, South Holland. Cycling was an early hobby for her. To train and test her speed, she chased after the buses. Her talent was noticed by neighbour Piet Moeskops, five-time sprint world champion (1921–1926). His compliments motivated her to further develop her cycling talent. In 1931, with some girlfriends, she founded the Hague women's cyclist club ''Vooruitgang Is Ons Streven'' (VIOS), one of the first Dutch women's cycling clubs. Loosduinen
Loosduinen () is a former village in the Netherlands that was a municipality unto itself until 1923, when it was annexed by The Hague and subsequently became a district of the city. Within the district there is also a neighbourhood (Dutch:wijk) called 'Loosduinen'. It has its own dialect, the Loosduinen dialect, which is very similar to The Hague dialect. History The area of modern-day Loosduinen has been inhabited for at least 4,500 years. Archaeologists have found many traces of previous civilisations during excavations. For example, traces of Romans and Cananefates have been found around the beginning of our era. The origin of the name Loosduinen, however, cannot be traced back in either objects that have been found during excavations and in literature. Willy De Bruyn
Willem Maurits De Bruyn (born Elvira (Elvire) De Bruyn; 4 August 1914 – 13 August 1989), was a Belgian cyclist, who became unofficial women's world champion in 1934 and 1936. Biography De Bruyn was born in 1914 in Erembodegem, East Flanders, Belgium with both male and female sex organs. He was officially inscribed as the daughter of his parents, and raised as a girl, but he soon was considerably taller and stronger than other girls his age, and by the age of fourteen he realised that he was not like other girls. This deeply upset and troubled him, even contemplating suicide. After De Bruyn finished his schooling in 1928, he started working in a cigarette company, before working in his parents' café a few months later. In the evenings, he secretly began reading about his condition in medical literature by e.g. Magnus Hirschfeld as well as mythological and anthropological studies.
