Midleton F.C.
Midleton Football Club is an Irish association football (soccer) club based in Midleton, County Cork. Their senior men's team currently plays in the Senior Premier Division of the Munster Senior League. History The club was founded on 10 June 1973 at Fr Murphy's Youth Club. The Chairman Pa Coakley and Secretary Michael Kirby were elected at the meeting. Started playing at Rosary Place and wearing yellow and blue. Midleton F.C. joined the Cork Athletic Union League in September of that year. They finished second in 1978–79. Midleton were named as FAI/Aviva Club of the Year in 2011–12 and were promoted to the Premier Division of the Munster Senior League and won it the following year. They have qualified for the FAI Cup on several occasions, reaching the Third Round in 2011. Ground The club grounds are Knockgriffin Park, located in the northwest of Midleton. Munster Senior League Senior Premier Division
The Munster Senior League Senior Premier Division is the top division of the Munster Senior League. It is organized by the Munster Football Association. Together with the Leinster Senior League Senior Division and the Ulster Senior League Senior Division, it forms the third level of the Republic of Ireland football league system. Clubs from this division play in the Munster Senior Cup, the FAI Cup, and the FAI Intermediate Cup. In recent seasons the winners of the Senior Division have also been invited to play in the League of Ireland Cup. Midleton
Midleton (; , meaning "monastery at the weir") is a town in south-eastern County Cork, Ireland. It lies approximately 16 km east of Cork City on the Owenacurra River and the N25 road, which connects Cork to the port of Rosslare. A satellite town of Cork City, Midleton is part of Metropolitan Cork. It is the central hub of business for the East Cork Area. Midleton is within the Cork East Dáil constituency. History In the 1180s advancing Normans led by Barry Fitz Gerald established an abbey at a weir on the river to be populated by Cistercian Monks from Burgundy. The abbey became known as "Chore Abbey" and "Castrum Chor", taking its name from the Irish word (weir), although some say that "Chor" comes from "Choir" or "Choral". The Cork Athletic Union League, also known as the Cork AUL, is an association football league featuring amateur and junior clubs from County Cork. Its top division, the Premier League, is a seventh level division in the Republic of Ireland football league system. The Cork AUL is currently sponsored by Murphy's Irish Stout. The Football Association of Ireland Senior Challenge Cup (FAI Cup), known as the Extra.ie FAI Cup for sponsorship reasons, is a knock-out association football competition contested annually by teams from the Republic of Ireland (as well as Derry City from Northern Ireland). Organised by the FAI ( Football Association of Ireland), the competition is currently sponsored by ''Extra.ie''. It was known as the Free State Cup from 1923 to 1936. Shamrock Rovers hold the record of most wins with 25. As of November 2022, the current holders are Derry City F.C. The 2011 FAI Senior Challenge Cup, also known as the 2011 FAI Ford Cup, is the 91st season of the national football competition of the Republic of Ireland. The winners of the competition will earn spots in both the second qualifying round of the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League and the 2012 Setanta Sports Cup. A total of 45 teams competed in the 2011 competition which commenced on the weekend ending on 20 March 2011. The 21 teams entered from the 2011 League of Ireland Premier and First divisions received byes into the third round stage while the remaining 24 teams entered at the first and Second round stages with all but four of these teams receiving byes into the second round. Billy Woods (Irish Footballer)
William Woods (born 24 October 1973 in Cork) is an Irish former professional footballer. He is now the Under 15s Coach with Cork City. Woods played all his schoolboy football with Midleton before spending two and a half years at Coventry City. He joined Cork City in 1993 and made his debut in October, playing under manager Damien Richardson during his first stint as manager when City played in Bishopstown. He joined Tranmere Rovers in July 199 After plying his trade there he returned to Ireland and signed for Portadown F.C. for one season in 1997. Woods signed for Shamrock Rovers in 1998 in time to make his debut away to Altay S.K. in the UEFA Intertoto-Cup on 21 June. He made two appearances for ''the Hoops'' in Europe.
