Midland Railway 6 Class
The Midland Railway 6 Class was a class of ten 0-4-4T steam locomotives. They were built at Derby Works in 1875. A development of the earlier 0-4-4WT of the 690 and 780 __NOTOC__ Year 780 ( DCCLXXX) was a leap year starting on Saturday of the Julian calendar. The denomination 780 for this year has been used since the early medieval period, when the Anno Domini calendar era became the prevalent method in Euro ... classes, but being the first Johnson engines, had side tanks instead of back tanks. The original MR numbers were 6, 15, 18, 137, 140–144 and 147. The 1907 numbers were 1226–1235. All passed to the LMS in 1923, but they were all withdrawn and scrapped by 1935. An abortive attempt was made to preserve the first of the class (No. 1226, which was withdrawn in 1930) and repainted back into its original livery and renumbered 6. Derby Works
The Derby Works comprised a number of British manufacturing facilities designing and building locomotives and rolling stock in Derby, England. The first of these was a group of three maintenance sheds opened around 1840 behind Derby station. This developed into a manufacturing facility called the Midland Railway Locomotive Works, known locally as "the loco" and in 1873 manufacturing was split into locomotive and rolling stock manufacture, with rolling stock work transferred to a new facility, Derby Carriage & Wagon Works. From its earliest days, it had carried out research and development in a number of areas, and in 1933 the London, Midland and Scottish Railway opened the LMS Scientific Research Laboratory. Under the Whyte notation for the classification of steam locomotives, 0-4-4 represents the wheel arrangement of no leading wheels, four powered and coupled driving wheels on two axles, and four trailing wheels on two axles. This type was only used for tank locomotives. In American cities, the type known as a ''Forney locomotive'', was used on the narrow curves of elevated railways and other rapid transit lines. Midland Railway
The Midland Railway (MR) was a railway company in the United Kingdom from 1844. The Midland was one of the largest railway companies in Britain in the early 20th century, and the largest employer in Derby, where it had its headquarters. It amalgamated with several other railways to create the London, Midland and Scottish Railway at grouping in 1922. The Midland had a large network of lines emanating from Derby, stretching to London St Pancras, Manchester, Carlisle, Birmingham, and the South West. It expanded as much through acquisitions as by building its own lines. It also operated ships from Heysham in Lancashire to Douglas and Belfast. The Midland Railway 690 Class was a class of six 0-4-4T built by Beyer, Peacock and Company in 1869 for use in the London area. They were double-framed Kirtley engines with a back tank, i.e. the tank was placed beneath the bunker. The 780 Class was similar. Their original numbers were 690–695. In 1898 they were transferred to the duplicate list as 690A–695A. Their 1907 numbers were 1200–1205. The Midland Railway 780 Class was a class of 0-4-4T steam locomotives. They were built by Dubs & Co. in 1870, and were very similar to the 690 Class. Originally numbers 780–799. They were double-framed engines with a back tank behind the cab under the bunker. They were all originally fitted with condensing apparatus for working the Metropolitan lines. In 1898, Nos. 780–783 were transferred to the duplicate list as Nos 780A–783A. Their 1907 numbers were 1206–1225. William Stanier
Sir William Arthur Stanier, (27 May 1876 – 27 September 1965) was a British railway engineer, and was chief mechanical engineer of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway. Biography Sir William Stanier was born in Swindon, where his father worked for the Great Western Railway (GWR) as William Dean's Chief Clerk, and educated at Swindon High School and also, for a single year, at Wycliffe College. In 1891 he followed his father into a career with the GWR, initially as an office boy and then for five years as an apprentice in the workshops. Between 1897 and 1900 he worked in the Drawing Office as a draughtsman, before becoming Inspector of Materials in 1900. In 1904, George Jackson Churchward appointed him as Assistant to the Divisional Locomotive Superintendent in London. In 1912 he returned to Swindon to become the Assistant Works Manager and in 1920 was promoted to the post of Works Manager.
