Midhopestones
Midhopestones (archaic ''Nether Midhope'', also ''Middup'', or ''Middop'') is a village partially in the civil parish of Bradfield within the Stocksbridge and Upper Don electoral ward in the borough of the City of Sheffield, England. Together with the nearby hamlet of Upper Midhope the two habitations have been collectively known as Midhope. The Boundary of the Metropolitan Borough of Barnsley and the City of Sheffield cuts through the Midhopestones. Upper Midhope has a Stocksbridge/Sheffield area code, Midhopestones a Penistone/Barnsley area code. Geography Midhopestones is a small village located 10 miles from Barnsley town centre 13 miles from Sheffield city centre, and straddles the border of both Sheffield and Barnsley Metropolitan areas. Upper Midhope
Upper Midhope (archaic ''Over Midhope'') is a hamlet in the civil parish of Bradfield within the Stocksbridge and Upper Don electoral ward in the borough of the City of Sheffield, England. It lies just on the edge of the Peak District national park. Historically the habitation, together with Nether Midhope (Midhopestones), were collectively known as Midhope. Geography and history Upper Midhope, formerly 'Over Midhope', is a hamlet in northwest of civil parish of Bradfield, close to the village of Langsett, located at a local high point between Langsett Reservoir and Midhope Reservoir. Together with the village of Midhopestones (formerly ''Nether Midhope''), the village forms the settlement referred to as Midhope (archaic ''Middop'' or ''Middup''). The Conservation Area Appraisal states that the hamlet dates to at least the medieval period, with records dating back to 1227 and archaeological evidence that goes back further. Midhope Castle
Midhope Castle is a late 16th-century tower house in Scotland. It is situated in the hamlet of Abercorn on the Hopetoun estate, About to the west of South Queensferry, on the outskirts of Edinburgh. It is a Category A listed building. History The derelict chateau that can be seen today represents the much-altered 5-storey, oblong tower house. In the 14th century the lands of Midhope were owned by Henry Graham of Mannerstoun. When he died without leaving a male heir Midhope passed to his two daughters. One of the daughters married Robert Livingstone of Drumry and Mannerstoun. The other daughter, Christian, married John Martin of Midhope, with Martin holding Midhope from the Livingstones of Drumry. In the 15th century Midhope belonged to the Martin family. In 1438, John Martin of Midhope was the laird, and he is thought to have built the original tower house.
