Middle Fork Feather River
The Middle Fork Feather River is a major river in Plumas and Butte Counties in the U.S. state of California. Nearly long, it drains about of the rugged northern Sierra Nevada range. Geography Its headwaters are located near Beckwourth in the largest alpine basin in the Sierra Nevada, the Sierra Valley. The convergence of several streams there creates the Sierra Valley Channels, the largest of which is Little Last Chance Creek, flowing out of Frenchman Lake across the northeast side of the valley. Flowing west, it is joined by Big Grizzly Creek, with waters from Lake Davis. The river continues west, passing Portola and turning northwest at Clio, where it is joined by Sulphur Creek. In the area of Graeagle, It is joined by Frazier Creek, flowing out of Gold Lake, then Gray Eagle Creek, flowing out of Long Lake. Feather Falls
Feather Falls is a waterfall located on the Fall River, a tributary of the Middle Fork Feather River, within the Plumas National Forest in the Sierra Nevada mountain range in Butte County, eastern California, United States. Description The Feather Falls were measured to be 410 feet tall. This concurs with the USGS Brush Creek 7½" quadrangle information. They have been incorrectly claimed to stand 640 feet tall. The falls can be partially seen from the middle arm of Lake Oroville but are usually observed from a platform accessed by either of two trails maintained by the United States Forest Service. North Fork Feather River
The North Fork Feather River is a watercourse of the northern Sierra Nevada and southern Cascades in the U.S. state of California. It flows generally southwards from its headwaters near Lassen Peak to Lake Oroville, a reservoir formed by Oroville Dam in the foothills of the Sierra, where it runs into the Feather River. The river drains about of the western slope of the Sierras. By discharge, it is the largest tributary of the Feather. Course It rises at the confluence of Rice Creek and a smaller unnamed stream in the southern part of the Lassen Volcanic National Park. Graeagle, California
Graeagle is a town and census-designated place in eastern Plumas County, California, United States, located along the Middle Fork Feather River in the Northern Sierra Nevada. The population was 737 as of 2010. History The town was founded in 1916 as a lumber town. A post office was established in 1919 with the moniker of Davies Mill. When the mill changed ownership in the 1920s, a naming contest was held. Belle Byrne contracted the name of nearby Gray Eagle Creek to Graeagle, winning the contest and its $5 prize. The name of the creek may have had some connection with Edward D Baker, the "Gray Eagle of Republicanism," who was in the mining region in 1856 while stumping the state for Frémont. Clio (formerly, Wash) is a census-designated place in Plumas County, California, United States. Clio is located southeast of Quincy. The population was 77 at the 2020 census, up from 66 at the 2010 census. Toponymy The original name was Wash; a post office with that name was opened in 1875. In 1905, according to local folklore, prominent citizens decided that the name "Wash" was too often mistaken for the town of Washington, in Nevada County on the south fork of the Yuba River. As suggested by Postmaster Fred King, it was decided the new name of their community should be Clio, the trade name prominently cast into the door of the heating stove they were looking at. Portola ( ) is the only incorporated city in Plumas County, California, United States. The population was 2,104 at the 2010 census, down from 2,227 at the 2000 census. Portola is located on the Middle Fork of the Feather River and was named after Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolá, although he did not explore this area. Portola is a crew change site on the Western Pacific Railroad (now Union Pacific Railroad) Feather River Route over the Sierra Nevada.
