Middle East Cancer Consortium
The Middle East Cancer Consortium (MECC) is a regional initiative for cancer research and treatment. Established in 1996, MECC members include the United States, Cyprus, Egypt, Israel, Jordan, the Palestinian Authority, and Turkey. MECC aims to reduce the incidence and impact of cancer in the Middle East region through the solicitation and support of collaborative research and regional education. Its motto is: "Respect all people, collaborate in fighting human suffering, and help build a bridge for better understanding among all." Leadership The executive director of MECC is Michael Silbermann. History MECC was established through an official agreement of the ministries of health of its six member states in the Middle East. Michael Silbermann
Michael Silbermann is an Israeli maxillofacial surgeon and health educator. He is currently the executive director of the Middle East Cancer Consortium. Background Silbermann was born on January 19, 1935, in the old quarters of the Arab city of Acre then part of Mandatory Palestine under British administration. His parents, Herbert and Marga-Miriam emigrated from their native Germany to Palestine in 1934. Career Following his military service, Silbermann moved to Jerusalem to study dental medicine at the Hebrew University-Hadassah Faculty of Dental Medicine. Following his studies in Jerusalem (1967), he moved to Boston (MA, United States) for specialty training in maxillo-facial surgery at Boston City Hospital under Philip Maloney and Chris Doku. The Middle East ( ar, الشرق الأوسط, ISO 233: ) is a geopolitical region commonly encompassing Arabia (including the Arabian Peninsula and Bahrain), Asia Minor (Asian part of Turkey except Hatay Province), East Thrace (European part of Turkey), Egypt, Iran, the Levant (including Ash-Shām and Cyprus), Mesopotamia (modern-day Iraq), and the Socotra Archipelago (a part of Yemen). National Cancer Institute
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) coordinates the United States National Cancer Program and is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which is one of eleven agencies that are part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Palliative Care
Palliative care (derived from the Latin root , or 'to cloak') is an interdisciplinary medical caregiving approach aimed at optimizing quality of life and mitigating suffering among people with serious, complex, and often terminal illnesses. Within the published literature, many definitions of palliative care exist. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes palliative care as "an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with life-threatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial, and spiritual."
