This is a list of high school athletic conferences in the Central Region of Ohio, as defined by the OHSAA. Because the names of localities and their corresponding high schools do not always match and because there is often a possibility of ambiguity with respect to either the name of a locality or the name of a high school, the following table gives both in every case, with the locality name first, in plain type, and the high school name second in boldface type. Ohio High School Athletic Association
The Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) is the governing body of athletic programs for junior and senior high schools in the state of Ohio. The OHSAA governs eligibility of student athletes, resolves disputes, organizes levels of competition by divisional separation of schools according to attendance population, and conducts state championship competitions in all the OHSAA-sanctioned sports. Membership There are approximately 820 member high schools and 850 more schools in the 7th-8th grade division of the OHSAA. Most public and private high schools in Ohio belong to the OHSAA. Africentric High School
Columbus Africentric Early College is a public high school in Columbus, Ohio. It is a part of Columbus City Schools. The school's previous name, Mohawk Middle School, was changed in the late 1990s, to allow the school not only separation from its original status, but also to expand it into a large school. Africentric was moved into a newly built building near the John Glenn Airport in 2016. The first organization that was started at Africentric was the Nubian Step Team. It was founded February 8, 1999 by Mama Eddings of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, Baba Hatton of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, and Baba Owens of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity. Centerburg High School
Centerburg High School is a public high school in Centerburg, Ohio, United States. It is the only high school in the Centerburg Local Schools district, offering grades 9–12. Its mascot is the Trojan. The Trojan's boys basketball team won the MOAC blue division conference championship in 2016. A new track has been completed at the high school as of 2019. It is also one of central Ohio's only schools to have a large solar panel field providing power to its high school. Village Academy
Village Academy (VA) was a PK–12 private, co-educational, college-preparatory school in Powell, Ohio, United States. It was established in 1976 and closed on July 19, 2019, due to a decline in enrollment and withdrawal of contracts. History Village Academy Schools was founded under the Learning Unlimited International Schools system in the fall of 1976 as a year-round preschool and kindergarten. The original campus was established directly across from to the Ohio State University. Over the next thirty years, the program expanded to become an independent preparatory school for students in pre-kindergarten through grade twelve. In 2006, the school was re-branded as Village Academy Schools, which consisted of Village Academy (Kindergarten-Grade 12) and the then-named Village Junior Academy (for pre-kindergarten and young kindergarten). Brookhaven High School (Columbus, Ohio)
Brookhaven High School was a State school, public high school located on the northeast side of Columbus, Ohio, United States. The school was a part of the Columbus City Schools system and opened in 1963. The school colors were navy blue and gold and the school nickname was the Bearcats. Since 2004, the school had been participating in the Small schools movement. Brookhaven was divided into three small schools: Leadership, North Star, and Legacy. Plans for creating a middle school were announced many years before its closing but were never finalized. After a decision made by the Columbus City Schools District, they announced that Brookhaven would be shut down by the end of the 2013-14 year due to declining population. Columbus North High School is a public high school building located on the north side of Columbus, Ohio at 100 E. Arcadia Avenue. It is part of the Columbus City School District. The school was closed in 1979 due to declining enrollment. In December 1921, the Columbus Board of Education purchased a thirteen-acre tract of land on Arcadia Ave., which included the old Columbus Sewer Pipe Factory, for $39,000. Famed architect, Frank Packard designed the building, of Tudor Revival architecture, costing approximately $1,000,000. Construction began in 1923 and the building opened on September 2, 1924. It graduated its first class in January 1925. The North High School building served as an adult education center for many years. Central High School, also known as High School of Columbus and High School of Commerce, was a four-year secondary school (grades 9–12) located in Franklinton (Columbus, Ohio), Franklinton, Columbus, Ohio. It was a part of Columbus City Schools (at the time Columbus Public Schools). The last building was located at 75 South Washington Boulevard and opened in 1924. Prior to that, Central High School was located Downtown at East Broad and Sixth streets from 1862 until 1924. The school building operated on South Washington Boulevard closed in June 1982. In 1999, the school's historic façade was incorporated into the COSI, Center of Science and Industry (COSI), a science center designed by renowned architect Arata Isozaki. West High School is a public high school located on the west side of Columbus, Ohio, in the Westgate neighborhood in the Hilltop area. It is a part of Columbus City Schools. History Due to overcrowding at Central High School in 1890s, a section of students split and were moved to another location, setting the foundation for what would become three new schools, including West High School. Designed by the first architect of Columbus schools, David Riebel, the Neo-Classical Revival style building was constructed in 1908 and opened in 1909 on South Central Avenue. The building became Starling Middle School when the new West High School opened. The new West High School opened in 1929. It was designed by prominent Ohio architect Howard Dwight Smith who also designed Ohio Stadium. West High School continues today at its current location at 179 South Powell Avenue. Walnut Ridge High School is a public high school located on the far east side of Columbus, Ohio at 4841 E Livingston Ave near the I-70 and Hamilton Road exit. The school is neighbored by the Far East Recreation Center and Big Walnut Creek. History The school colors are red, gray and white and the school's sports teams nickname is the Scots in honor of the school's sister school, The Harlaw Academy in Scotland. South High School is a public high school located on the south side of Columbus, Ohio. It was opened in 1900 as the fourth Columbus City Schools high school at 345 Deshler Avenue. The current building was opened March 31, 1924. The Charles S. Barrett Building at 345 E. Deshler Ave (named for that building's first principal in 1924 when it was reutilized as a junior high school) opened September 1900. Prior to that in 1895-1897 South High School utilized part of the Ohio Avenue Elementary School. In 1897 it was decided that the building was too far east for its name; the south side students were returned to the Central High School building at 6th & Broad Streets, and the building process began on the Deshler Street Building.
