Mid-Anglia Radio
Mid-Anglia Radio PLC, was a company that owned radio stations in the Norfolk and Cambridgeshire regions of the UK. The stations they owned were: * Hereward FM, Hereward Radio, in Peterborough (and, briefly, in Northampton as well). * Worlds Greatest Music Station (or WGMS 1332) – in Peterborough. * CN-FM 103, in Cambridge. * KL.FM 96.7, in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, sold to Bauer Media. History In March/April 1994 Mid-Anglia Radio PLC was sold to Swindon based GWR Group, (now Global Radio) for £3.5M. It was said that Mid-Anglia Radio had made a loss of £12,186 for the year ending 30 September 1993. After the GWR Group bought the Mid-Anglia Radio group of stations, a couple of stations were renamed. WGMS became Classic Gold 1332, and CN-FM 103 became Heart Cambridge, Q103. Heart 103 (formerly Q103) was an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to Cambridge on 103.0 MHz and DAB Digital Radio. Heart also broadcast in Newmarket and Haverhill on 97.4 MHz. History The station was originally owned by Mid-Anglia Radio and began life as CNFM (Cambridge and Newmarket FM) in February 1989, before being renamed to Q103 FM in June 1994 when it was acquired by the GWR Group. In 2004 the name was slightly adjusted to Q103 Cambridge after their launch on DAB Digital Radio. On 1 August 2007, Q103 reverted to their 2004 strapline of "Today's Best Mix", also dropping the "Cambridge" from their name to reflect the newly extended TSA area (covering Haverhill and the longly served Newmarket on the Cambridgeshire-Suffolk border). Heart East was a regional radio station owned and operated by Global as part of the Heart network. It broadcast to the East of England from studios in Milton Keynes. The station launched on 3 June 2019, following a merger of four Heart stations in Cambridgeshire, East Anglia, Essex and the Four Counties. The station ceased on 21 February 2025. Heart is a network of thirteen independent adult contemporary radio stations in the United Kingdom, broadcasting a mix of local and networked programming, although only the stations in Scotland and Wales still have their own shows. Ten of the stations are owned and operated by Global, while the other three are owned and operated under separate franchise agreements. Smooth East Midlands is an Independent Regional Radio station for the East Midlands, 107.4 MHz, 97.2 MHz, 106.8 MHz 106.0 MHz which replaced Saga 106.6 FM at 6 am on Monday 26 March 2007. It is owned by Communicorp UK and operated by Global as part of the Smooth network of stations. Connect FM closed and merged with Smooth East Midlands on 1 October 2019 in Kettering, Corby, Wellingborough, Northampton, Peterborough and Rushden. Smooth Radio (2014)
Smooth Radio is a network of local radio stations broadcasting on FM and DAB in the United Kingdom. It no longer broadcasts any outlets on AM since the last outlet on medium wave ceased at 1:00pm on Friday 28th February 2025. Smooth Radio previously featured a soft adult contemporary radio format but has introduced more upbeat music since 2023. Launched in March 2014, it replaced the national Smooth Radio that had launched in 2010 on FM and DAB, and most outlets of Gold on AM. Each FM station broadcasts localised breakfast with networked shows simulcast from London at all other times. Four of the seven FM stations, and the former AM stations, are owned and operated by Global, with the remaining three FM licences owned by Communicorp UK and run as a franchise. Greatest Hits Radio (GHR) is a classic hits radio network in the United Kingdom, owned and operated by Bauer Media Audio UK. It currently includes 18 local and regional radio stations operating over 50 FM and DAB licences in England, Scotland and Wales, as well as a national DAB station in areas not served by a local Bauer-owned licence. The GHR brand launched on 7 January 2019 as an "older" companion to Hits Radio, which Bauer had launched in 2018. It is a rebranding of the former Bauer City 2 Network (launched on 5 January 2015) due to the success of Radio City 2 in Liverpool on FM. Bauer Media Audio UK is a UK-based radio division of Bauer Media Group owning brands; Absolute Radio, Greatest Hits Radio, Jazz FM, Hits Radio, KISS, Planet Rock, Magic, Kerrang! The UKRD Group Ltd was a British media company that owned 15 commercial radio stations in the United Kingdom. The name originates from UK Radio Developments. Since its acquisition in March 2019, it has been run as a subsidiary of Bauer Radio. Classic Gold 1332 was an Independent Local Radio station broadcasting to the Peterborough area on 1332 kHz AM and DAB digital radio. It also was available around Cambridge on DAB digital radio. It was part of the Classic Gold Digital Network which was owned by GCap and was the sister station of 102.7 Hereward FM. Its studios were based in the Queensgate Centre, Peterborough. History The station was launched on 10 July 1980, as Hereward Radio, broadcasting on 102.7 FM and 1332 AM. On 14 April 1992 the station split its AM and FM frequencies, with 102.7 Hereward FM broadcasting on 102.7 FM and The Worlds Greatest Music Station or WGMS launching on 1332 AM.
