The Michigan Golf Classic was a tournament on the PGA Tour that was played in September 1969 at the Shenandoah Golf & Country Club, a par-70, 6,708-yard course in Walled Lake, Michigan. The event was won by Larry Ziegler, a 30-year-old from Bonne Terre, Missouri, and was his first PGA Tour win. Walled Lake, Michigan
Walled Lake is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. A northwestern suburb of Detroit, Walled Lake is located roughly northwest of downtown Detroit. As of the 2020 census, the city had a population of 7,246. History The town's name is said to have been given by the first American settler, Walter Hewitt, in 1825. Upon his arrival, he noticed what appeared to be a stone wall along the western bank of a nearby lake, possibly constructed by earlier Potawatomi Indian tribes. The PGA Tour (stylized as PGA TOUR by its officials) is the organizer of professional golf tours in North America. Stroke Play
Stroke play is a scoring system in the sport of golf. In the regular form of stroke play, also known as medal play, the total number of strokes is counted over one or more rounds of 18 holes. In a regular stroke play competition, the winner is the player who has taken the fewest strokes over the course of the round, or rounds. Homero Blancas
Homero Blancas, Jr. (born March 7, 1938) is an American professional golfer who has played on both the PGA Tour and the Senior PGA Tour (now known as the Champions Tour). Amateur career Blancas, who is of Mexican American descent, was born in Houston, Texas. He attended the University of Houston from 1958 to 1962, and was a member of the golf team. Blancas shot a record-setting round of 55 (27-28) in a college tournament, which stands as the lowest round in the history of competitive golf. His 13 birdies and an eagle on a par-70 course in Longview, Texas on August 19, 1962 earned him the nickname "Mr. 55." He was inducted into the University of Houston Athletics Hall of Fame in 1978. Larry Ziegler
Larry Ziegler (born August 12, 1939) is an American professional golfer who played on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour. Early life Ziegler was born in St. Louis and grew up in Creve Coeur, Missouri. He was one of 14 children; he had seven brothers and six sisters. He began as a caddie and worked his way up to head club pro. Professional career In 1959, Ziegler turned professional. He had more than 40 top-10 finishes in PGA Tour events during his career including three wins. He had three top-10 finishes in major championships; his best was T3 at the Masters Tournament in 1976.
