Michigan ElvisFest
The Michigan ElvisFest is an annual two-day festival occurring each July in Riverside Park and Depot Town in Ypsilanti, Michigan, devoted to celebrating singer and actor Elvis Presley. History The Michigan ElvisFest was founded in 1999. Started by Elvis tribute artists Matt King and Sherman Arnold in cooperation with the Ypsilanti Depot Town Association, to celebrate the music and the influence of Elvis Presley and replace the previous Ypsilanti based music festival, the Bob Marley Festival. Since then, it has grown to be the largest Elvis festival in North America, attended by approximately 20,000 fans each year. With the 2020 ElvisFest cancelled as the COVID-19 pandemic was to blame, the 22nd was deferred to 2021. Depot Town
Depot Town is a commercial area, with some residences above storefronts, in Ypsilanti, Michigan's historic district. Depot Town proper consists of East Cross Street from the Huron River (Michigan), Huron River to North River Street, and a small area on the 300-block of North River Street. However, several blocks in the surrounding area are also commonly referred to as part of Depot Town. These areas include Riverside Park, Frog Island Park (both of which are on the Huron River), and River Street extending north and south for several blocks. First established in the late 1830s, most of the buildings standing today were constructed between 1850 and 1880. Over the years, Depot Town has included hotels, an Underground Railroad station, an American Civil War barracks, and a building that has housed a bar and restaurant continuously for more than 150 years, switching to soft drinks during Prohibition. ''The Eastern Echo'' is the independent student newspaper of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan. The paper is funded through advertising revenue. The paper is published on Mondays during the fall and winter semesters. Although EMU funds a Student Media Director, that official has no editorial influence over the content of the ''Eastern Echo''. History The newspaper started as the Normal News in 1881 when the school was known as Normal College. It later became the Normal College News and, then, the ''Eastern Echo'' in 1956, when the university was renamed to Eastern Michigan College. The newspaper is currently operating out of the second floor of King Hall, a former dormitory which has been converted into office space for a number of campus organizations and services.
