Michelle Suárez Bértora
Michelle Suárez Bértora (21 February 1983 – 22 April 2022) was a Uruguayan activist, lawyer, lecturer, politician, and writer. She was Uruguay's first openly transgender university graduate, first openly trans lawyer, and first openly transgender person elected to office. Biography Michelle Suárez Bértora was born 21 February 1983 in Salinas, Canelones Department, Uruguay. She transitioned at the age of 15 with the support of her mother. Studious, she followed her dream and became an attorney. Suárez went to primary and secondary school in Salinas before entering university in 2004. After six years of study, and a legal transition to allow her to graduate with her proper gender, Suárez earned her doctorate. She was the first (and only) trans-woman to become a lawyer in Uruguay graduating in 2010 from the University of the Republic as the first openly transgender person to complete university studies in the country. Salinas, Uruguay
Salinas is a city and resort of the Costa de Oro in the Canelones Department of southern Uruguay. Salinas is also the name of the municipality to which the town belongs and which includes the resort towns Marindia, Pinamar–Pinepark, Neptunia, Uruguay, Neptunia and rural areas to their north. Geography The city is located on Kilometre Zero#Uruguay, Km.39 of Ruta Interbalnearia, and at its intersection with Route 87. It borders the resorts Pinamar-Pinepark to the west and Marindia to the east. History On 1 July 1982, its status was elevated from "Balneario" (resort) to "Ciudad" (city) by the Act of Ley Nº 15.283. Population According to the 2011 census, Salinas had a population of 8,626. In 2010 the ''Intendencia de Canelones'' had estimated a population of 16,874 for the municipality during the elections.
