Michael Turner (Australian Rules Footballer)
Michael Turner (6 December 1954 – 30 December 2024) was an Australian rules footballer who played 245 games for the Geelong Football Club in the Australian Football League, Victorian Football League (VFL) from 1974 to 1988. Biography Turner grew up in Warrnambool, Victoria and completed his final years of high school at Monivae College in Hamilton, Victoria, Hamilton. He followed in the footsteps of his father, Leo Turner (1928–1997), in representing Geelong and played as a wingman and half-forward. He was an All-Australian in 1979 and captained the club for three seasons between 1984 and 1986. In 1982, he was Geelong's leading goalkicker with 40 goals. In 1989, Turner signed on as captain-coach of Werribee Football Club, Werribee in the Victorian Football Association. In 1995, he was appointed by AFL Victoria to be the regional manager for the Geelong Falcons, responsible for the development of junior talent in the area. The Warrnambool Football Netball Club, nicknamed the ''Blues'', is an Australian rules football and netball club based in the Warrnambool, city of the same name. Warrnambool teams compete in the Hampden Football Netball League, where the football squad has played since 1933. The Victorian Football League (VFL) is an Australian rules football competition in Australia operated by the Australian Football League (AFL) as a second-tier, regional, semi-professional competition. In team sport, team of the century and team of the decade are hypothetical best teams over a given time period. For the century team, it can be either 100 years, or for a century (always the 20th). Similarly the team of the decade can be for 10 years or a decade (for example the 1980s). Teams of the decade and century are selected for both leagues and clubs and sometimes selected for other reasons, such as to honour the contribution of a particular ethnic group. Teams of the 20th century in particular have been controversial due to their loose criteria and the systemic bias toward current players, given that the performance of players before the advent of broadcasting of matches cannot be reviewed and relies on hearsay and archival records.
