Michael Sklar
Michael Joel Sklar (July 12, 1944 – March 5, 1984) was an American actor, writer, songwriter, and fashion retailer. He was best known as a Warhol superstar, starring in multiple films by Warhol and Paul Morrissey Paul Morrissey (born February 23, 1938) is an American film director, best known for his association with Andy Warhol. He was also director of the first film in which a transgender actress, Holly Woodlawn, starred as a girlfriend of the main cha ... before his death. Sklar died of lymphoma at the New York University Medical Center on March 5, 1984, and was survived by his mother, Bertha Sklar, a sister, Carol Wueste, and a brother, Norman Sklar. Andy Warhol (; born Andrew Warhola Jr.; August 6, 1928 – February 22, 1987) was an American visual artist, film director, and producer who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as pop art. His works explore the relationship between artistic expression, advertising, and celebrity culture that flourished by the 1960s, and span a variety of media, including painting, silkscreening, photography, film, and sculpture. Warhol Superstars
Warhol superstars were a clique of New York City personalities promoted by the pop artist Andy Warhol during the 1960s and early 1970s. These personalities appeared in Warhol's artworks and accompanied him in his social life, epitomizing his famous dictum, " In the future everyone will be famous for fifteen minutes". Warhol would simply film them, and declare them "superstars". History The first recognised superstar was Baby Jane Holzer, whom Warhol featured in many of his early film experiments. The superstars would help Warhol generate publicity while Warhol offered fame and attention in return. Warhol's philosophies of art and celebrity met in a way that imitated the Hollywood studio system at its height in the 1930s and 1940s. Among the best-known of Warhol's superstars was Edie Sedgwick. Paul Morrissey
Paul Morrissey (born February 23, 1938) is an American film director, best known for his association with Andy Warhol. He was also director of the first film in which a transgender actress, Holly Woodlawn, starred as a girlfriend of the main character played by Joe Dallesandro in '' Trash'' (1970). Life and career Of Irish extraction, Morrissey attended Ampleforth College and Fordham University, both Catholic schools, and later served in the United States Army. A political conservative and self-described "right-winger", who has publicly protested against immorality and anti-Catholicism, Morrissey's long-term collaboration with the low-keyed, apparently apolitical Warhol was viewed by many as "a successful mismatch", although both men did share some traits, e.g. both were practicing Catholics from ethnic backgrounds (Warhol was of Rusyn descent). ''Trash'' is a 1970 American drama film directed and written by Paul Morrissey and starring Joe Dallesandro, Holly Woodlawn and Jane Forth. Dallesandro had previously starred in several other Andy Warhol/Paul Morrissey films such as ''The Loves of Ondine'', ''Lonesome Cowboys'', '' San Diego Surf'', and ''Flesh''. Woodlawn made her screen debut in this film; director George Cukor famously instigated a write-in campaign to have her nominated for an Academy Award, but this did not materialize. Jane Forth, a 17-year-old model, also makes her debut in this film. She would shortly afterwards appear on the cover of '' Look'' magazine. ''Women in Revolt'' is a 1971 American satirical film produced by Andy Warhol and directed by Paul Morrissey. The film stars Jackie Curtis, Candy Darling, and Holly Woodlawn, three trans women and superstars of Warhol's Factory scene. It also features soundtrack music by John Cale. This film is notable as the last with Warhol behind the camera. During production from 1970 to 1971, Jackie Curtis insisted that Warhol shoot the film, or she threatened to leave the project. The film satirizes the Women's Liberation Movement, and alludes to Valerie Solanas and the ''SCUM Manifesto''. Plot Holly and Jackie form a small group of "women's libbers." They convince Candy, a wealthy socialite who has an incestous relationship with her brother, to join them at their meetings. The group needs Candy's membership to bring money and "glamour" to their cause.
