Michael Sandberg, Baron Sandberg
Michael Graham Ruddock Sandberg, Baron Sandberg, CBE (, 31 May 1927 – 2 July 2017) was executive chairman of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation from 1977 to 1986. Biography Sandberg was born in Surrey and educated at St Edward's School, Oxford. In 1945 he joined the army and was commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the Royal Armoured Corps in 1946, and was promoted to lieutenant in November 1947. He later volunteered to join the Indian Army. Upon Indian independence he joined the First King's Dragoon Guards in January 1949. In 1949 he joined The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, becoming chairman and chief executive in 1977. During his chairmanship the bank saw substantial international expansion, acquiring a 51% stake in Marine Midland Bank in the United States of America, establishing the Hongkong Bank of Canada in 1981 and HongkongBank of Australia Limited in 1986. Life Peer
In the United Kingdom, life peers are appointed members of the peerage whose titles cannot be inherited, in contrast to hereditary peers. Life peers are appointed by the monarch on the advice of the prime minister. With the exception of the Dukedom of Edinburgh awarded for life to Prince Edward in 2023, all life peerages conferred since 2009 have been created under the Life Peerages Act 1958 with the rank of baron, and entitle their holders to sit and vote in the House of Lords so long as they meet qualifications such as age and citizenship. Oswald Cheung
Sir Oswald Victor Cheung (; 22 January 1922 – 10 December 2003) was a barrister in Hong Kong, known as the "doyen of the bar". "Ossie" was the first ethnic Chinese to become a Queen's Counsel in colonial Hong Kong, and the first Chinese chairman of the Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club. Cheung was a mentor to a number of eminent lawyers, including Audrey Eu and Margaret Ng. The Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC) was founded in 1884 and is one of the oldest institutions in Hong Kong. In 1960, it was granted a royal charter and renamed The Royal Hong Kong Jockey Club (). The institution reverted to its original name in 1996 due to the handover of Hong Kong in 1997. Membership of the club is by nomination and election. It is a non-profit organisation providing horse racing, sporting and betting entertainment in Hong Kong. Peter Gordon Williams
Peter Gordon Williams, OBE, JP (23 January 1920 – 14 October 1982) was a British businessman and an unofficial member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Williams was a fencer and a cricket player. He was an artillery officer in the British Indian Army during the Second World War. After the war, he met and married Anne Newmarch of Guy Newmarch, a railway engineer in North China, and Catherine Muir, in London. The couple had two sons, Adam and Piers. Through Anne's connections, Peter Williams got a job with the Dodwell & Co, a Far East trading company in Hong Kong. He became the director and later the chairman of the company. He was also the chairman of the Inchcape after it purchased the Dodwell for £13 million in 1973. Sir William "Willie" Purves, (, born 27 December 1931) was a Scottish banker until his retirement in 1998. He was the first Group Chairman of HSBC Holdings following the creation of a holding company to act as parent to The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation and the Midland Bank following the former's acquisition of Midland in 1992.
