Michael Russell (bishop Of Glasgow And Galloway)
Michael Russell (12 August 1781 – 2 April 1848) was the first Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway from 1837 to his death in 1848. Life He was the eldest son of John Russell of Edinburgh. Matriculating at the University of Glasgow November 1800, he graduated M.A. in 1806. He was then appointed second master of Stirling grammar school, but, having become a convert to the Scottish Episcopal Church, he resigned the post and opened a school of his own. In 1808 Russell was admitted into deacon's orders, and ordained to the charge of a small congregation in Alloa; he continued with his school until his appointment in the autumn of the following year to the charge of St. James's Chapel, Leith. In 1831 he was made dean of the diocese of Edinburgh, and on 8 October 1837 he was ordained bishop of Glasgow and Galloway, on the separation of the diocese from Edinburgh and St. Andrews. Michael Russell (10 December 1920 – 12 January 2009) was the Roman Catholic Bishop of Waterford and Lismore in Ireland from 1965 to 1993. Education and Ordination Born in Loughmore, Thurles, Co Tipperary, in 1920, Russell was educated at the Christian Brothers School in Thurles, and played minor hurling for Tipperary. He was sent to study for the priesthood at St Patrick's College, Maynooth and was ordained there on 17 June 1945 for service in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cashel and Emly. He began postgraduate studies and, in 1948, was awarded a doctorate in Canon Law. In the summer he was appointed to the staff of St. Patrick's College, Thurles where he lectured where he lectured in moral theology. He became vice-president in 1959. He also played the simple-system flute and was a collector of traditional music and folklore. Michael Russell (1844 – May 6, 1901) was an American businessman and politician from New York (state), New York. Life He was born in 1844 in Troy, New York, Troy, Rensselaer County, New York. He attended the public schools. In 1862, he enlisted as a Private (rank), private in the 169th New York Volunteer Infantry, and fought in the American Civil War, being promoted eventually to the rank of Brevet (military), brevet Captain (United States O-3), captain. Michael William Russell (born 9 August 1953) is a Scottish politician serving as Chairman of the Scottish Land Commission since 2024, having previously served in the Scottish Cabinet under Alex Salmond and Nicola Sturgeon. A member of the Scottish National Party (SNP), he was the Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP) for Argyll and Bute from 2011 to 2021, and a list MSP for South of Scotland from 1999 to 2003 and 2007 to 2011. Michael Craig Russell (born May 1, 1978) is an American former professional tennis player, and tennis coach. He reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 60 in August 2007. His 23 United States Tennis Association (USTA) Pro Circuit singles titles were the all-time record, as of November 2013. That month he became the American No. 3. In 1994 Russell was ranked No. 1 in both singles and doubles in the USTA Boys' 16 rankings, and in 1996 he was ranked No. 1 in singles in the U.S. Boys' 18-Under. Playing for the University of Miami in 1996–97, he was named National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Rookie of the Year, before he turned pro in 1997. He has been described as an "archrival" of India's prodigy, Geet Sethi, an eight-time World Champion, and each of them had defeated the other for the title, with Russell victorious in 1996, and Sethi the winner in 1998, as of their next encounter at the 2007 event.
