Michael Nadli
Michael Nadli is a Canadian politician, represented the electoral district of Deh Cho in the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories from the 2011 election until the 2019 election. Political career Nadli first ran for a seat to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories in the 2003 Northwest Territories general election. He ran in a two-way contest in the Deh Cho electoral district against incumbent Michael McLeod but was defeated. Nadli would face McLeod for the second time in the 2011 Northwest Territories general election. There would again be two candidates contesting the race with Nadli taking 64% of the popular vote to win his first term in office. The Northwest Territories Legislative Assembly, or Legislative Council of the Northwest Territories (with Northwest hyphenated as North-West until 1906), is the legislature and the seat of government of Northwest Territories in Canada. It is a unicameral elected body that creates and amends law in the Northwest Territories. Permanently located in Yellowknife since 1993, the assembly was founded in 1870 and became active in 1872 with the first appointments from the Government of Canada. Until 2014, the assembly was officially defined under federal law as "Legislative Council". However, under Northwest Territories territorial law, it was defined as "Legislative Assembly". The federal name was changed when the Northwest Territories Act was rewritten in 2014. Under different periods of its history it has alternated names. Michael McLeod (born September 6, 1959) is a Canadian politician, currently serving as a member of Parliament representing the Northwest Territories. He was first elected in the 2015 Canadian federal election, unseating Dennis Bevington, who was the incumbent New Democratic Party MP for the riding. McLeod was a former member of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories, Canada, as well as the former mayor of Fort Providence. Political career McLeod was born in Fort Providence, Northwest Territories. When he was 22, he served as a mayor of Fort Providence after being chosen by the local Dene council. McLeod first ran for a seat in the 1999 Northwest Territories general election. He won an upset election defeating Speaker Samuel Gargan to win the Deh Cho electoral district. The 2019 Northwest Territories general election was held on October 1, 2019. Nineteen members were elected to the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Election On September 6, 2019, Premier Bob McLeod announced that he would not seek re-election. 2015 Northwest Territories General Election
The 2015 Northwest Territories general election was held November 23, 2015. Under the territory's fixed election date legislation, the election was supposed to be held on October 5, 2015, however, since the federal election date of October 19, 2015, overlapped with that date, the N.W.T. government moved the date of the territorial election. The election selected 19 members of the Legislative Assembly of the Northwest Territories. Term extension debate In March 2014 the current Legislative Assembly voted to extend its term from four years to five. The act will need to be approved by the federal government. The reason given for postponing the election was to avoid voter fatigue, with municipal elections and the next federal election scheduled for October 2015.
