Michael McDaniel (professor)
Emeritus Prof. Michael McDaniel AO is a Wiradjuri man who has significantly contributed to the Australian cultural and education sectors and community over more than three decades. McDaniel is the former chair of Bangarra Dance Theatre, current Special Advisor (Indigenous Priorities) at the University of Technology Sydney, and chair of the Museum of Contemporary Art's Indigenous Advisory Group. Early life and education McDaniel grew up in the town of Forbes as a member of the Kalari Clan in the Wiradjuri Nation in Central New South Wales, Australia. McDaniel attended Darlinghurst Public School in Sydney. After being in the army between ages 16 and 20, McDaniel enrolled in Western Sydney University and graduated with the University Medal. Order Of Australia
The Order of Australia is an Australian honours and awards system, Australian honour that recognises Australian citizens and other persons for outstanding achievement and service. It was established on 14 February 1975 by Elizabeth II, Monarchy of Australia, Queen of Australia, on the Advice (constitutional law), advice of then prime minister Gough Whitlam. The NAIDOC Awards are annual Australian awards conferred on Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander individuals during the national celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples known as NAIDOC Week. Possum-skin Cloak
Possum-skin cloaks were a form of clothing worn by Aboriginal people in the south-east of Australia – present-day Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales. In Western Australia, Buka cloak was worn. They are made from pelts of various possum species. The cloaks were made from numerous possum pelts sewn together with kangaroo sinew, and often decorated with significant incisions on the inside such as clan insignias. They were rubbed with mixture of resin, ochre and fat to both decorate and protect them. As well as being a significant means of keeping warm in this often chilly part of Australia, there was much importance around the making of the cloaks and their wearing. They were handed down through generations as heirlooms. Wiradjuri
The Wiradjuri people (; ) are a group of Aboriginal Australian people from central New South Wales, united by common descent through kinship and shared traditions. They survived as skilled hunter-fisher-gatherers, in family groups or clans, and many still use knowledge of hunting and gathering techniques as part of their customary life. In the 21st century, major Wiradjuri groups live in Condobolin, Peak Hill, Narrandera and Griffith. There are significant populations at Wagga Wagga and Leeton and smaller groups at West Wyalong, Parkes, Dubbo, Forbes, Cootamundra, Darlington Point, Cowra and Young. A kalari is a gymnasium or training space primarily associated with the martial art of Kalaripayattu. The word ''kalari'' comes from Tamil. In the past, village schools in Tamilnadu, typically run by the traditional astrologer families, were known by the name ''kalari''.
