Michael Matt
Michael Matt (born 13 May 1993) is an Austrian World Cup alpine ski racer. He specialises in the Slalom discipline and has competed in three World Championships. Career Matt made his World Cup debut at age 20 in the Levi slalom in November 2013, racing alongside his brother Mario. He competed at the 2015 World Championships in Beaver Creek, US. Matt raced in the slalom, but failed to finish the second run. Matt gained his first World Cup podium in Finland as the runner-up at Levi on 13 November 2016, and celebrated his first victory on 5 March 2017 in Slovenia at Kranjska Gora. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyongchang, South Korea, Matt finished the first run of the slalom competition in 12th place but moved up to third after the second run, securing himself the bronze medal. He was also part of the Austrian squad which took a silver medal in the team event. Slalom Skiing
Slalom is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, involving skiing between poles or gates. These are spaced more closely than those in giant slalom, super giant slalom and downhill, necessitating quicker and shorter turns. Beaver Creek Resort is a major ski resort in the western United States, near Avon, Colorado. The resort comprises three villages, the main Beaver Creek, Colorado, Beaver Creek Village, Bachelor Gulch, and Arrowhead to the west. Mario Matt (born 9 April 1979) is an Austrian former FIS Alpine Ski World Cup, World Cup Alpine skiing, alpine ski racer and Alpine skiing at the 2014 Winter Olympics – Men's slalom, Olympic gold medalist. Slalom racing career Born in Zams, Tyrol (state), Tyrol, Matt made his World Cup debut in December 2000 Alpine Skiing World Cup, 1999. Levi, Finland
Levi is a fell located in Finnish Lapland, and the largest ski resort in Finland. The resort is located in the village of Sirkka, Kittilä municipality and is served by Kittilä Airport and Kolari railway station. At a latitude of 67.8° north, it is located approximately north of the Arctic Circle. The peak of the Levi fell is at an elevation of above sea level. There are 43 ski slopes (17 of which are floodlit) and 27 ski lifts in Levi. The FIS Alpine World Ski Championships is an alpine skiing competition organized by the International Ski Federation (FIS). History The inaugural world championships in alpine skiing were held in 1931. During the 1930s, the event was held annually in Europe, until interrupted by the outbreak of World War II, preventing a 1940 event. An event was held in 1941, but included competitors only from nations from the Axis powers or nations not at war with them. The men's slalom competition of the PyeongChang 2018 Olympics was held on 22 February 2018 at the Yongpyong Alpine Centre at the Alpensia Sports Park in PyeongChang. Qualification Up to a total of 320 alpine skiers qualified across all eleven events. Athletes qualified for this event by having met the A qualification standard, which meant having 140 or less FIS Points and being ranked in the top 500 in the Olympic FIS points list or meeting the B standard, which meant 140 or less FIS points.
