Northern Lighthouse Board
The Northern Lighthouse Board (NLB) is the general lighthouse authority for Scotland and the Isle of Man. It is a non-departmental public body responsible for marine navigation aids around coastal areas. History The NLB was formed by Act of Parliament in 1786 as the Commissioners of Northern Light Houses, largely at the urging of the lawyer and politician George Dempster ("Honest George"), to oversee the construction and operation of four Scottish lighthouses: Kinnaird Head, North Ronaldsay, Scalpay and Mull of Kintyre, for which they were empowered to borrow up to £1,200. Admiral Sir Michael Henry Gordon Layard, (born 3 January 1936) is a retired senior Royal Navy officer who served as Second Sea Lord from 1992 to 1995. Admiral Sir Hugo Moresby White, (22 October 1939 – 1 June 2014) was a senior officer of the Royal Navy and subsequently Governor of Gibraltar. Admiral Sir John Jeremy Black, (17 November 1932 – 25 November 2015), known as Jeremy Black or J. J. Black, was a senior Royal Navy officer. He commanded the aircraft carrier during the Falklands War, and later served as Commander-in-Chief Naval Home Command from 1989 until his retirement in 1991.
