Michael Kapovich
Michael Kapovich (also ''Misha Kapovich'', Михаил Эрикович Капович, transcription Mikhail Erikovich Kapovich, born 1963) is a Russian-American mathematician. Kapovich was awarded a doctorate in 1988 at the Sobolev Institute of Mathematics in Novosibirsk with thesis advisor Samuel Leibovich Krushkal and thesis "Плоские конформные структуры на 3-многообразиях" (Flat conformal structures on 3-manifolds, Russian lang. thesis). Kapovich is now a professor at University of California, Davis, where he has been since 2003. János Kollár
János Kollár (born 7 June 1956) is a Hungarian mathematician, specializing in algebraic geometry. Professional career Kollár began his studies at the Eötvös University in Budapest and later received his PhD at Brandeis University in 1984 under the direction of Teruhisa Matsusaka with a thesis on canonical threefolds. He was Junior Fellow at Harvard University from 1984 to 1987 and professor at the University of Utah from 1987 until 1999. Currently, he is professor at Princeton University. Contributions Kollár is known for his contributions to the minimal model program for threefolds and hence the compactification of moduli of algebraic surfaces, for pioneering the notion of rational connectedness (''i.e.'' extending the theory of rationally connected varieties for varieties over the complex field to varieties over local fields), and finding counterexamples to a conjecture of John Nash. Mladen Bestvina
Mladen Bestvina (born 1959) is a Croatian-American mathematician working in the area of geometric group theory. He is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Utah. Life and career Mladen Bestvina is a three-time medalist at the International Mathematical Olympiad (two silver medals in 1976 and 1978 and a bronze medal in 1977). He received a B. Sc. in 1982 from the University of Zagreb. He obtained a PhD in Mathematics in 1984 at the University of Tennessee under the direction of John Walsh. He was a visiting scholar at the Institute for Advanced Study in 1987-88 and again in 1990–91. Bruce Kleiner
Bruce Alan Kleiner is an American mathematician, working in differential geometry and topology and geometric group theory. He received his Ph.D. in 1990 from the University of California, Berkeley. His advisor was Wu-Yi Hsiang. Kleiner is a professor of mathematics at New York University. Kleiner has written expository papers on the Ricci flow. Together with John Lott of the University of Michigan, he filled in details of Grigori Perelman's proof of the Geometrization conjecture (from which the Poincaré conjecture follows) in the years 2003–2006. Theirs was the first publication acknowledging Perelman's accomplishment (in May, 2006), which was shortly followed by similar papers by Huai-Dong Cao and Xi-Ping Zhu (in June) and John Morgan and Gang Tian (in July). Albert Marden
Albert Marden (born 18 November 1934) is an American mathematician, specializing in complex analysis and hyperbolic geometry. Education and career Marden received his PhD in 1962 from Harvard University with thesis advisor Lars Ahlfors. Marden has been a professor at the University of Minnesota since the 1970s, where he is now professor emeritus. He was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) in the academic year 1969–70, Fall 1978, and Fall 1987. His research deals with Riemann surfaces, quadratic differentials, Teichmüller spaces, hyperbolic geometry of surfaces and 3-manifolds, Fuchsian groups, Kleinian groups, complex dynamics, and low-dimensional geometric analysis. Concerning properties of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, Marden formulated in 1974 the tameness conjecture, which was proved in 2004 by Ian Agol and independently by a collaborative effort of Danny Calegari and David Gabai.
