Michael Jones (swimmer)
Michael "Mikey" Jones Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, MBE (born 10 June 1994) is a British Paralympic swimmer classified as a S7 (classification), S7 competitor for swimmers with physical disabilities. Jones competed at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in the Swimming at the 2016 Summer Paralympics – Men's 50 metre freestyle, 50 metre freestyle, Swimming at the 2016 Summer Paralympics – Men's 100 metre freestyle, 100 metre freestyle, and won gold in the Swimming at the 2016 Summer Paralympics – Men's 400 metre freestyle, 400 metre freestyle. He is coached by Mark Rose. Early life Michael Jones was born in Poole on 10 June 1994 with spastic diplegia, a type of cerebral palsy that primarily affects his legs. Freestyle Swimming
Freestyle is a category of Swimming (sport), swimming competition, defined by the rules of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), in which competitors are subject to a few limited restrictions on their swimming stroke. Freestyle races are the most common of all swimming competitions, with distances beginning with 50 meters (50 yards) and reaching 1500 meters (1650 yards), also known as the mile. The term 'freestyle stroke' is sometimes used as a synonym for 'front crawl', as front crawl is the fastest surface swimming stroke. It is now the most common stroke used in freestyle competitions. The first Olympics held open water swimming events, but after a few Olympics, closed water swimming was introduced. The front crawl or freestyle was the first event that was introduced. Loughborough University (abbreviated as ''Lough'' or ''Lboro'' for post-nominals) is a public research university in the market town of Loughborough, Leicestershire, England. The 2017 New Year Honours are appointments by some of the 16 Commonwealth realms to various orders and honours to recognise and reward good works by citizens of those countries. Member Of The Order Of The British Empire
The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire is a British order of chivalry, rewarding contributions to the arts and sciences, work with charitable and welfare organisations, and public service outside the civil service. It was established on 4 June 1917 by King George V and comprises five classes across both civil and military divisions, the most senior two of which make the recipient either a knight if male or dame if female. There is also the related British Empire Medal, whose recipients are affiliated with, but not members of, the order. 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships
The 2016 IPC Swimming European Championships was an international swimming competition. It was held in Funchal, Madeira running from 30 April to 7 May. Around 450 athletes from 50 different countries attended the competition. This was the last major swimming tournament for disabled athletes prior to the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio, and acted as a qualifying event for the Rio Games. To increase the possibility of qualification for top swimmers, the championships was made an Open tournament allowing competitors from countries outside Europe to compete. Venue The Championship was staged at the Complexo Olimpico de Piscinas da Penteada, which also held the 2005 Multi-nations Youth Meet and the 2015 Winter International Masters Open.
