Michael James MacDonald
Michael James MacDonald (August 8, 1909''Canadian Parliamentary Guide, 1956'', PG Normandin – July 3, 1997) was a union leader, coal miner, volunteer firefighter and politician in Nova Scotia. Born and raised in Cape Breton, the son of James MacDonald, MacDonald worked in the coal mines as a young man in order to support his family following the death of his father. He was involved with the United Mine Workers of America and was president of Local Union 4521 from 1938 until 1941 when he had to quit mining after being seriously injured in a stone fall.Obituary:Michael James MacDonald, ''Cape Breton Post'', July 4, 1997, page B7/C19 He then worked as a salesman for a bakery in Sydney, Nova Scotia, forming a union and becoming its president. Nova Scotia New Democratic Party
The Nova Scotia New Democratic Party is a social democracy, social-democratic, Progressive politics, progressive provincial party in Nova Scotia, Canada. It is the provincial entity of the federal New Democratic Party (NDP). It was founded as the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) in 1932, and became the New Democratic Party in 1961. It became the governing party of Nova Scotia following the 2009 Nova Scotia general election, 2009 Nova Scotia election, winning 31 seats in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, Legislature, under the leadership of Premier Darrell Dexter. It is the first New Democratic Party in Atlantic Canada to form a government, and the second to form a government in a province east of Manitoba. Russell Cunningham (Nova Scotia Politician)
Russell Cunningham (December 29, 1905 – March 6, 1985) was a Canadian social democratic politician from Cape Breton Island in Nova Scotia. He was the leader of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation in Nova Scotia from 1945 until 1953. He succeeded Donald MacDonald as the party's leader, after MacDonald lost his seat in the 1945 general election. He represented the electoral district (riding) of Cape Breton East in the Nova Scotia House of Assembly from 1945 until 1956. Due to the Conservatives not electing a single member to the Assembly, Cunningham became the leader of the Official Opposition during the 44th General Assembly of Nova Scotia. Even though the CCF lost a seat, it was the first time they ever were the Official Opposition.
