Michael Gannon (historian)
Michael V. Gannon (April 28, 1927 – April 11, 2017) was a historian, educator, priest, and war correspondent. Early life and education Michael Valentine Gannon was born into a military family in Fort Sill, Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His family moved to Florida from Washington, D.C. after the death of his father in 1939. Gannon attended high school at St. Joseph Academy (St. Augustine, Florida), St. Joseph Academy in St. Augustine, Florida and received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He received a Ph.D in history from the University of Florida in 1962. Fort Sill, Oklahoma
Fort Sill is a United States Army post north of Lawton, Oklahoma, about 85 miles (137 km) southwest of Oklahoma City. It covers almost . The fort was first built during the Indian Wars. Samuel Proctor Oral History Program
The Samuel Proctor Oral History Program (SPOHP) is the official oral history program at the University of Florida. With over 6,500 interviews and more than 150,000 pages of transcribed material, it is one of the premier oral history programs in the United States. SPOHP's mission is "to gather, preserve, and promote living histories of individuals from all walks of life." The program involves staff, undergraduate and graduate students, and community volunteers in its operation. History The program was founded by Dr. Samuel Proctor in 1967 as the University of Florida Oral History Program. Its original projects were collections centered around Florida history with the purpose of preserving eyewitness accounts of economic, social, political, religious and intellectual life in Florida and the Southern United States, South. Order Of La Florida
The Order of La Florida is an award given by the City of St. Augustine, Florida to those who have rendered extraordinary services to the city. History The award was established in 1975. Recipients must be at least fifty-five years old and there may not be any more than nine living recipients alive at a given time. Nominations come from a member of the city commission, which are then presented to the city manager. Whenever a recipient of the award dies, flags in the city are flown at half-staff. Recipients In February 2018, Carl Halbirt became the twentieth and most recent recipient of the award. Halbirt spent twenty-seven years as the St. Augustine's city archaeologist. With the city he conducted more than 800 archaeological digs as part of St. Augustine's Archaeological Preservation Ordinance. Halbirt helped to give archaeology in the city more publicity.
