Michael Finnis
Michael W. Finnis is a British materials scientist who is Professor of Theory and Simulation of Materials at Imperial College London. He uses atomic-scale computation to understand atomic interactions, grain boundary embrittlement and open system thermodynamics. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 2021, and awarded the Institute of Physics Dirac Medal in 2022. Early life and education Finnis was born in Margate. He studied natural sciences at the University of Cambridge, where he specialised in theoretical physics. He remained in Cambridge for his doctoral research, working with Volker Heine on condensed matter physics. His PhD investigated interatomic forces in simple metals. He started working on tight-binding models, and that the total bonding energy of transition metals scaled with the square root of the coordination number (z). IBM System/360
The IBM System/360 (S/360) is a family of mainframe computer systems announced by IBM on April 7, 1964, and delivered between 1965 and 1978. System/360 was the first family of computers designed to cover both commercial and scientific applications and a complete range of applications from small to large. The design distinguished between architecture and implementation, allowing IBM to release a suite of compatible designs at different prices. All but the only partially compatible Model 44 and the most expensive systems use microcode to implement the instruction set, featuring 8-bit byte addressing and fixed-point binary, fixed-point decimal and hexadecimal floating-point calculations. The Thomas Young Centre (TYC) is an alliance of London research groups working on the theory and simulation of materials (TSM). Ruth Marion Lynden-Bell, FRS (born 7 December 1937) is a British chemist, emeritus professor of Queen's University Belfast and the University of Cambridge, and acting President of Murray Edwards College, Cambridge from 2011 to 2013. Education Ruth Lynden-Bell began her education at King Edward VI High School for Girls, Birmingham. She subsequently studied at Newnham College, Cambridge (BA 1959, PhD 1962) and studied under Norman Sheppard. She briefly studied under the direction of Harden M. The Cray-1 was a supercomputer designed, manufactured and marketed by Cray Research. Announced in 1975, the first Cray-1 system was installed at Los Alamos National Laboratory in 1976. Eventually, eighty Cray-1s were sold, making it one of the most successful supercomputers in history. It is perhaps best known for its unique shape, a relatively small C-shaped cabinet with a ring of benches around the outside covering the power supplies and the cooling system. The Cray-1 was the first supercomputer to successfully implement the vector processor design. These systems improve the performance of math operations by arranging memory and registers to quickly perform a single operation on a large set of data. Volker Heine
Volker Heine (born 19 September 1930) is a German-born New Zealand and British physicist who is a Professor Emeritus at University of Cambridge. He is considered a pioneer of theoretical and computational studies of the electronic structure of solids and liquids and the determination of physical properties derived from it.
