Michael F. Tighe
Michael Francis Tighe (1858-1940) was an American steelworker and trade union leader. He was a member of the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers for 64 years. From 1911 to 1919, he served as secretary-treasurer. He then was elected national president, a position he kept until December 31, 1936. He was known as a relative conservatism within the labor movement and opposed John L. Lewis and the formation of the CIO before eventually working with the CIO's Steel Workers Organizing Committee. The AA and SWOC merged in 1942 to form the United Steelworkers. Early life Tighe was the son of a steelworker. He began working at the age of 10 in a nail factory in Wheeling, West Virginia where he made $2 a week. He began his career as a steelworker at 14 and served an apprenticeship as a member of the Sons of Vulcan. Personal Tighe married to Elizabeth Leonhart of Marietta, Ohio on August 15, 1889. Amalgamated Association Of Iron And Steel Workers
Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers (AA) was an American labor union formed in 1876 to represent iron and steel workers. It partnered with the Steel Workers Organizing Committee of the CIO, in November 1935. Both organizations disbanded May 22, 1942, to form a new organization, the United Steelworkers. The Homestead strike The Homestead strike was a major turning point for the union. Andrew Carnegie placed strong anti-unionist Henry Clay Frick in charge of his company's operations in 1881. With the union's contract due to expire on June 30, 1892, Frick demanded a 22 percent wage decrease, then unilaterally announced that if an agreement was not reached, he would no longer recognize the union. Frick locked the workers out on June 29. The striking workers ringed the plant and patrolled the Monongahela River (which ran alongside the mill) to prevent anyone from entering. "John L" is a song by English rock band Black Midi, released in 2021 as the lead single from their second studio album, ''Cavalcade (Black Midi album), Cavalcade''. Steel Workers Organizing Committee
The Steel Workers Organizing Committee (SWOC) was one of two precursor labor organizations to the United Steelworkers. It was formed by the CIO ( Committee for Industrial Organization) on June 7, 1936. It disbanded in 1942 to become the United Steel Workers of America.
