Michael Downs
Michael Lynn Downs (born June 9, 1959) is a former American football safety in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Phoenix Cardinals. He played college football at Rice University. Early years Downs graduated from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, Texas. In football, he served as a team captain and was named All-District as a senior. He also lettered in track and field. He was a member of the Honor Society. He accepted a football scholarship from Rice University, where he became a three-year starter at safety. As a sophomore, he intercepted 3 passes in a game against Texas Christian University, tying a single-game school record. As a senior, he was named a co-captain and although he was limited with a pinched nerve in his neck, he received All-Southwest Conference and honorable-mention All-American honors. Safety is a position in gridiron football on the defense. The safeties are defensive backs who line up ten to fifteen yards from the line of scrimmage. There are two variations of the position: the free safety and the strong safety. Their duties depend on the defensive scheme. 1982 NFL Season
The 1982 NFL season was the 63rd regular season of the National Football League. A 57-day-long players' strike reduced the 1982 season from a 16-game schedule per team to an abbreviated nine game schedule. Because of the shortened season, the NFL adopted a special 16-team playoff tournament; division standings were ignored for seeding (although each division sent at least two teams, except the NFC West which had only one). Eight teams from each conference were seeded 1–8 based on their regular season records. Two teams qualified for the playoffs despite losing records (the Cleveland Browns and the Detroit Lions). The season ended with Super Bowl XVII when the Washington Redskins defeated the Miami Dolphins 27–17 at the Rose Bowl stadium. Joe Theismann
Joseph Robert Theismann (born September 9, 1949) is an American former professional football player, sports commentator, corporate speaker and restaurateur. A cornerback (CB) is a member of the defensive backfield or secondary in gridiron football. Cornerbacks cover receivers most of the time, but also blitz and defend against such offensive running plays as sweeps and reverses. Frederick Dextor Clinkscale (born April 13, 1958) is a former American football safety in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Indianapolis Colts. James Randell Hughes (born April 3, 1953) is a former American football safety who played six seasons in the National Football League for the Dallas Cowboys. He played college football at the University of Oklahoma and was drafted in the fourth round of the 1975 NFL Draft.
