Michael Cole (politician)
Sir Michael Cole was an Irish politician. He was the son of Michael Cole and Alice Coote, and grandson of Sir William Cole, Provost of Enniskillen. Sir John Cole, 1st Baronet, was his uncle and father-in-law. By his wife and cousin Elizabeth Cole, daughter of Sir John and his wife Elizabeth Chichester, he had a son, John Cole MP, who was the father of John Cole, 1st Baron Mountflorence. Michael Cole was educated at Trinity College, Dublin. William Cole (planter)
Sir William Cole (c.1571–1653) was an English soldier and politician, who participated in the Plantation of Ulster and established a settler town at Enniskillen, County Fermanagh. Despite his initial loyalty to the Stuarts, he was a leading English Parliamentarian figure in the Irish Confederate Wars of the 1640s. Early life and arrival in Ireland Cole was born and raised in London, the only son of Emmanuel Cole of Devon. He was educated at Cambridge University before becoming a soldier in the English Army and fighting in the Low Countries during the Anglo-Spanish War. He arrived in Ireland in 1599 to fight in the Nine Years' War. He was commissioned as a lieutenant in 1601 and participated in the Siege of Kinsale in 1603, after which he was promoted to captain. In 1607, Cole was given command of Enniskillen Castle, which he later purchased outright in 1623. Enniskillen ( , from ga, Inis Ceithleann , ' Ceithlenn's island') is the largest town in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. It is in the middle of the county, between the Upper and Lower sections of Lough Erne. It had a population of 13,823 at the 2011 Census. Enniskillen Castle was built in the 15th century as a stronghold of the Maguires, before coming under English control in the early 17th century. The castle and town were expanded during the Plantation of Ulster. It was the seat of local government for the former Fermanagh District Council, and is the county town of Fermanagh. Toponymy The town's name comes from the ga, Inis Ceithleann. This refers to Cethlenn, a figure in Irish mythology who may have been a goddess. Sir John Cole, 1st Baronet (died 1691) was an Anglo-Irish politician. Biography He was the second son of Sir William Cole (died 1653), a key figure in the Plantation of Ulster, and his second wife Catherine Parsons, daughter of Sir Lawrence Parsons of Birr Castle, Baron of the Court of Exchequer (Ireland) and Anne Malham. William was a Londoner, the only son of Emmanuel Cole, from a family which originated in Devon. Sir Arthur Ingram, the investor, landowner and politician was a cousin through William's mother, Margaret Ingram. John's elder brother Michael was the ancestor of the Earl of Enniskillen. Cole was a Royalist who, as Governor of Enniskillen, had been a prominent promoter of the interests of Charles II of England. John Cole, 1st Baron Mountflorence (13 October 1709 – 30 November 1767) was an Irish peer and politician. Born in Dublin, he was the son of John Cole, Member of Parliament for Enniskillen. In 1726 he was admitted to Trinity College Dublin,''Alumni Dublinenses : a register of the students, graduates, professors and provosts of Trinity College in the University of Dublin (1593–1860)'', George Dames Burtchaell/Thomas Ulick Sadleir p. 163: Dublin, Alex Thom and Co, 1935 where he was educated, and four years later was returned to the Irish House of Commons as member for his father's old seat of Enniskillen, a constituency he represented until his ennoblement. Thomas Ulick Sadleir
Thomas Ulick Sadleir (1882–1957) was an Irish genealogist and heraldic expert. He was successively registrar of the Order of St Patrick, Deputy Ulster King of Arms and Acting Ulster King of Arms. Career Sadleir's first involvement with the office of arms at Dublin Castle was when he worked on an unpaid basis whilst an undergraduate at Trinity College, Dublin. He graduated in 1904, and was called to the bar in 1906. By 1913, he was working on a daily basis at the office, whilst practising as a barrister. In 1915 he was appointed registrar of the Order of St Patrick by George Dames Burtchaell, Deputy Ulster King of Arms. In practice, Sadleir carried out most of the day-to-day work of Ulster's office. In 1915, Sadleir wrote an unofficial 6th volume of the annual Georgian Society Records called Georgian mansions in Ireland along with Page Dickinson.
