Michael Clarke (skier)
Michael Andrew Clarke (born 24 August 1970 in Melbourne, Australia) is a former Australian mogul skier. He won the Junior World Mogul Championships in 1989, Australia's first ever skiing world championship win. Not just Australia's first skiing world champion but Australia's first world champion in any of the winter Olympic sports. From Falls Creek, Clarke, won the mogul event at the junior world championships in Sälen æːlen locality Sweden. The only other Australian to win a world championship skiing medal was Malcolm Milne, who won a downhill bronze in 1967. Falls Creek, Victoria
The Falls Creek Alpine Resort is an alpine ski resort in the Hume region in northeastern Victoria, Australia. It is located in the Alpine National Park in the Victorian Alps, approximately by road from Melbourne, with the nearest town being Mount Beauty, which is approximately away. The resort lies between an elevation of above sea level, with the highest lifted point at . Skiing is possible on the nearby peak of Mount McKay at , accessed by snowcat from the resort. The resort is an unincorporated area, directly administered by the government of Victoria, and surrounded by the Alpine Shire. Mogul Skiing
Mogul skiing is a freestyle skiing competition consisting of one timed run of free skiing on a steep, heavily moguled course, stressing technical turns, aerial maneuvers and speed. Internationally, the sport is contested at the FIS Freestyle World Ski Championships, and at the Winter Olympic Games. Moguls are a series of bumps on a piste formed when skiers push snow into mounds as they do sharp turns. This tends to happen naturally as skiers use the slope but they can also be constructed artificially. Once formed, a naturally occurring mogul tends to grow as skiers follow similar paths around it, further deepening the surrounding grooves known as troughs. Since skiing tends to be a series of linked turns, moguls form together to create a bump field. The term "mogul" is from the Bavarian/ Austrian German word ''Mugel'', meaning "mound, hillock". The Australian Sports Medal is an award given to recognise achievements in Australian sport to commemorate Australian participation in major sporting events. Original recipients of the award included competitors, coaches, sports scientists, office holders, and people who maintained sporting facilities and services. During the original period of its award in 2000–2001, over 18,000 medals were awarded. The award was permanently reactivated in 2020 to commemorate Australian contributions and participation in major multi-sport events.
