Michael Botticelli (figure Skater)
Michael C. Botticelli (July 10, 1959 – February 28, 2023) was an American figure skater who competed in pairs with Sheryl Franks. The couple won the bronze medal at the United States Figure Skating Championships four consecutive times, beginning in 1977, and finished seventh at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. He coached at William L. Chase Arena. Botticelli was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on July 10, 1959. He died on February 28, 2023, at the age of 63. Figure Skater
Figure skating is a sport in which individuals, pairs, or groups perform on figure skates on ice. It was the first winter sport to be included in the Olympic Games, when contested at the 1908 Olympics in London. The Olympic disciplines are men's singles, women's singles, pair skating, and ice dance; the four individual disciplines are also combined into a team event, first included in the Winter Olympics in 2014. The non-Olympic disciplines include synchronized skating, Theater on Ice, and four skating. From intermediate through senior-level competition, skaters generally perform two programs (the short program and the free skate), which, depending on the discipline, may include spins, jumps, moves in the field, lifts, throw jumps, death spirals, and other elements or moves. Sheryl Franks
Sheryl Franks (born May 26, 1961 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is an American former pair skater who competed with Michael Botticelli. The couple won the bronze medal at the United States Figure Skating Championships four consecutive times (from 1977–80), won the Eastern US Pairs Championship in 1977-79, and placed ninth in the World Championships in 1977-79, and 10th in 1980. They finished seventh at the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Franks subsequently became a skating coach, forming The Sheryl Franks Creative Skating Academy in West Newton, Massachusetts, and choreographed for future Olympian for Israel Aimee Buchanan. United States Figure Skating Championships
The U.S. Figure Skating Championships is a figure skating competition held annually to crown the national champions of the United States. The competition is sanctioned by U.S. Figure Skating. In the U.S. skating community, the event is often referred to informally as "Nationals". Medals are currently awarded in four disciplines: men's (boys') singles, ladies' (girls') singles, pair skating, and ice dancing in four colors: gold (first), silver (second), bronze (third), and pewter (fourth) on two levels, senior and junior. Medals were previously given at the novice, intermediate, and juvenile levels. 1980 Winter Olympic Games
The 1980 Winter Olympics, officially the XIII Olympic Winter Games and also known as Lake Placid 1980, were an international multi-sport event held from February 13 to 24, 1980, in Lake Placid, New York, United States. Lake Placid was elected as the host city for the 1980 Winter Games at the 75th International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session in Vienna, Austria in 1974. This marked the second time the Upstate New York village hosted the Winter Games, after 1932. Nebelhorn Trophy
The Nebelhorn Trophy is an international senior-level figure skating competition organized by the Deutsche Eislauf-Union and held annually in Oberstdorf, Germany. It became part of the ISU Challenger Series in the 2014–15 season. The competition is named after the Nebelhorn, a nearby mountain. It is usually one of the first international senior competitions of the season.
