Michael Basha
Michael G. Basha (20 January 1896 – 26 November 1976) was a Canadian businessman, manufacturer, and Senator. Born in Baalbeck, Ottoman Empire The Ottoman Empire (), also called the Turkish Empire, was an empire, imperial realm that controlled much of Southeast Europe, West Asia, and North Africa from the 14th to early 20th centuries; it also controlled parts of southeastern Centr ..., he was summoned to the Canadian Senate in 1951 and represented the senatorial division of West Coast, Newfoundland and Labrador. A Liberal, he resigned in November 1976 shortly before his death. Basha is considered the first Arab politician to be appointed to the Canadian Senate. He is also one of the first Arab politicians in Canadian history. The Senate of Canada () is the upper house of the Parliament of Canada. Together with the Monarchy of Canada#Parliament (King-in-Parliament), Crown and the House of Commons of Canada, House of Commons, they compose the Bicameralism, bicameral legislature of Canada. Baalbeck
Baalbek (; ; ) is a city located east of the Litani River in Lebanon's Beqaa Valley, about northeast of Beirut. It is the capital of Baalbek-Hermel Governorate. In 1998, the city had a population of 82,608. Most of the population consists of Shia Muslims, followed by Sunni Muslims and Christians; in 2017, there was also a large presence of Syrian refugees. Baalbek has a history that dates back at least 11,000 years, encompassing significant periods such as Prehistoric, Canaanite, Hellenistic, and Roman eras.
