Michael Albert Thomas
Michael Albert Thomas (M. Albert Thomas) is an Indian-American physicist, academic, and clinical researcher. He is a Professor-in-Residence of Radiological Sciences, and Psychiatry at the Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is most known for developing novel single voxel based 2D NMR techniques (L-COSY and JPRESS), multi-voxel 2D MRS techniques (4D/5D echo-planar correlated and J-resolved spectroscopic Imaging, EP-COSI/EP-JRESI) using hybrid Cartesian as well as non-Cartesian spatio-temporal encoding such as concentric ring, radial and rosette trajectories. Thomas has authored over 150 peer-reviewed publications and 12 book chapters. His research is focused on the physics of Magnetic resonance imaging and spectroscopy, with particular emphasis on the development and evaluation of Magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) techniques in the context of healthy tissues and different pathologies. Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopic Imaging
Magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) is a noninvasive imaging method that provides spectroscopic information in addition to the image that is generated by MRI alone. Whereas traditional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) generates a black-and-white image in which brightness is determined primarily by the T1 or T2 relaxation times of the tissue being imaged, the spectroscopic information obtained in an MRSI study can be used to infer further information about cellular activity (metabolic information). For example, in the context of oncology, an MRI scan may reveal the shape and size of a tumor, while an MRSI study provides additional information about the metabolic activity occurring in the tumor. MRSI can be performed on a standard MRI scanner, and the patient experience is the same for MRSI as for MRI. Compressed sensing (also known as compressive sensing, compressive sampling, or sparse sampling) is a signal processing technique for efficiently acquiring and reconstructing a Signal (electronics), signal by finding solutions to Underdetermined system, underdetermined linear systems. This is based on the principle that, through optimization, the sparsity of a signal can be exploited to recover it from far fewer samples than required by the Nyquist–Shannon sampling theorem.
