Mexicali Rose (song)
"Mexicali Rose" is a popular song composed by bandleader and pianist Jack Breckenridge Tenney in the early 1920s, when he and his seven piece orchestra played the hotels and clubs of the Calexico and Mexicali border. The song became a hit in the mid-1930s, thanks to Gene Autry and Bing Crosby, around the same time that Tenney became a lawyer and was elected to the California State Assembly. Tenney was later appointed to head of the California Senate Factfinding Subcommittee on Un-American Activities. Background Born in St. Louis, Tenney arrived in Los Angeles as a boy of ten in 1908 with his parents. During World War I, he fought with the American Expeditionary Force in France. Upon his return, he married Leda Westrem, a 16 year-old stenographer, and they had a baby while living at 3764 South Main street, Los Angeles. Starting as the B-side of Gene Autry's " Mexicali Rose", penned by Autry, 'You're the Only Star in My Blue Heaven' was also popular in Hillbilly jukeboxes and radios in the mid-late 1930s. After the Columbia Broadcasting System, Inc. (CBS) purchased ARC and Gene's contract in December 1938. (soon renaming the company "Columbia Records"), 'Star' was re-recorded on at Columbia's new Hollywood studio, located at KNX Radio, Sunset and Gower (Autry and Bob Wills would record many of their great 1940s Okeh and Columbia hits at this location). The younger version is over 20 seconds shorter. At first, only Roy Acuff and his Crazy Tennesseans recorded the song (Roy on October 21, 1936)., and in 1938 by The Delmore Brothers. Brawley, California
Brawley (formerly Braly) is a city in Imperial County, California, United States within the Imperial Valley. The population was 26,416 at the 2020 census, up from 24,953 at the 2010 census. Year-round agriculture is an important economic activity in Brawley. The town has a significant cattle and feed industry, and hosts the annual Cattle Call Rodeo. "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine" was Gene Autry's first hit record in 1932, written and performed with fellow railroadman Jimmy Long. Thanks to his new career as a singing cowboy in 1935, it became Writing and recording Jimmy Long was Gene Autry's brother-in-law and business manager, and it appears that he wrote most, if not all, of "That Silver Haired Daddy of Mine".
