Methuselah (lungfish)
Methuselah (captured 1938; born as early as 1922) is an Australian lungfish residing at the Steinhart Aquarium. She is known for being the oldest living fish in captivity as of 2023. Life Methuselah arrived at San Francisco's Steinhart Aquarium on November 6, 1938. She was transported from Melbourne, Australia, in the cargo hull of a Matson liner steamship, alongside 231 other fish from Australia and Fiji. At the time of her arrival, she was already grown and estimated to be at least 7 years old. She was first mentioned in the ''San Francisco Chronicle'' in 1947. She was joined by another lungfish, named after Herb Caen, in 1952 or 1958. She was given the name Methuselah by Steinhart Aquarium director John McCosker in 1988 after spending 50 years at the aquarium. Due to damage incurred in the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake, the original Steinhart Aquarium was torn down in 2005. Neoceratodus Forsteri
The Australian lungfish (''Neoceratodus forsteri''), also known as the Queensland lungfish, Burnett salmon and barramunda, is the only surviving member of the family Neoceratodontidae. It is one of only six extant lungfish species in the world. Endemic to Australia, the Neoceratodontidae are an ancient family belonging to the class Sarcopterygii, or lobe-finned fishes. Fossil records of this group date back 380 million years, around the time when the higher vertebrate classes were beginning to evolve. Fossils of lungfish almost identical to this species have been uncovered in northern New South Wales, indicating that ''Neoceratodus'' has remained virtually unchanged for well over 100 million years, making it a living fossil and one of the oldest living vertebrate genera on the planet. Lungfish
Lungfish are freshwater vertebrates belonging to the class Dipnoi. Lungfish are best known for retaining ancestral characteristics within the Osteichthyes, including the ability to breathe air, and ancestral structures within Sarcopterygii, including the presence of lobed fins with a well-developed internal skeleton. Lungfish represent the closest living relatives of the tetrapods (which includes living amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals). The mouths of lungfish typically bear tooth plates, which are used to crush hard shelled organisms. Today there are only six known species of lungfish, living in Africa, South America, and Australia, though they were formerly globally distributed. The fossil record of the group extends into the Early Devonian, over 410 million years ago. Hanako (fish)
Hanako ( Japanese: ) (purportedly 1751 – July 7, 1977) was a scarlet koi fish reportedly owned by several individuals, the last of whom was Komei Koshihara. She was reported to be the longest-lived koi fish ever recorded, having died at the age of 226, although there is dispute as to the veracity of her longevity. Longevity Most koi fish from Japan live around forty years. Far exceeding the average lifespan for koi, she was reportedly 226 years old at the time of her death. Her age was said to be determined in 1966 by removing two of her scales and examining them extensively. At this time, Hanako weighed and measured in length. Once the scales were fully analyzed, it was determined that she was 215 years old. In July 1974, a study of the growth rings of one of the koi's scales reported that Hanako was 226 years old. Shedd Aquarium
Shedd Aquarium (formally the John G. Shedd Aquarium) is an indoor public aquarium in Chicago. Opened on May 30, 1930, the aquarium holds about 32,000 animals. It is the third largest aquarium in the Western Hemisphere (after the Georgia Aquarium and The Seas at Epcot) and the 11th-largest aquarium in the world. Methuselah
Methuselah (; ''Məṯūšélaḥ'', in pausa ''Məṯūšālaḥ'', "His death shall send" or "Man of the javelin" or "Death of sword"; ''Mathousalas'') was a biblical patriarch and a figure in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. He is claimed to have lived the longest life, dying at 969 years of age. According to the Book of Genesis, Methuselah was the son of Enoch, the father of Lamech, and the grandfather of Noah.
