Metakse Poghosian
Metakse or Metakse Poghosian (), December 23, 1926 – August 10, 2014, Yerevan) was an Armenian poet, writer, translator and public activist. She was a member of the Advisory Board of the Writers Union of Armenia. Biography Born in Artik, Metakse authored many popular books including poem collections (''Youth'', ''Female Heart'', and ''A Conversation with the World''). In 2006 she published ''The Woman of the Fate'', an anthology of her selected works. Her poetry has been translated into English, French, Japanese, Bulgarian, Serbian, Spanish and other languages by Bella Akhmadulina, Desanka Maksimović, Diana Der Hovanessian and others. After the 1988 Armenian earthquake she became the vice-president of "Motherhood" benevolent fund, supporting female members of the Armenian Army during the First Nagorno-Karabakh War. Artik
Artik () is a town in the Artik Municipality of the Shirak Province of Armenia. As of the 2011 census, the town had a population of 19,534. As per the 2016 official estimate, the population of Artik was around 18,800. As of the 2022 census, the town had a population of 17,647. Artik is famous for its tufa stones, mainly the pink and rosy colored tufa. It is the main centre of tufa and travertine production in Armenia. Etymology According to an 11th-century inscription found in Lmbatavank monastery of Artik, the town was known as Hartk () during the Middle Ages. It was later known as Ardik (), Ardik' () and Artik (). According to locals, the name consists of 2 parts: ''Ar'' derived from ''Mount Aragats'', and ''tik'' meaning ''leaning'' in Armenian. Paruyr Sevak
Paruyr Sevak (; January 24, 1924 – June 17, 1971) was an Armenians, Armenian poet, translator and literary critic. He is considered one of the greatest Armenian poets of the 20th century. Biography Sevak was born Paruyr Ghazaryan () in the village of Chanakhchi (now Zangakatun), Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, Armenian SSR, Soviet Union to Rafael and Anahit Soghomonyan on January 24, 1924. His ancestors had migrated to Chanakhchi, a remote, mountainous village, from the village of Havtvan in Salmast (Salmas), Iran in 1828. Young Paruyr attended the village school, where he wrote his first poems and published them in the school wall newspaper. Sevak spent part of his childhood and adolescence in a location called ''Navchalu yayla'' near his native village; in his early writings, he signed his writings with 'Navchalu' as the location where they were written. Hovhannes Shiraz
Hovhannes Shiraz (; April 27, 1914 – March 24, 1984) was an Armenians, Armenian poet. Biography Shiraz was born Onik Tadevosi Karapetyan in the city of Alexandropol, then part of the Russian Empire (now Gyumri, Armenia). His mother, Astghik, was widowed by the Armenian genocide shortly before his birth. Shiraz grew up in considerable poverty. His first work, called ''Beginning of Spring'', was published in 1935. Novelist Atrpet gave the talented poet the epithet "Shiraz", because "this youth's poems have the fragrance of roses, fresh and covered with dew, like the roses of Shiraz" (Shiraz being one of Iran's major cities, famous for its roses and poets). Another version of his pen name is "Shirak azn"—a child of Shirak, the region he was from. Shirak Province
Shirak (, ) is a provinces of Armenia, province () of Armenia. It is located in the north-west of the country, bordering the provinces of Lori Province, Lori to the east and Aragatsotn Province, Aragatsotn to the south and southeast, and the countries of Turkey to the west and Georgia (country), Georgia to the north. Its capital and largest city is Gyumri, which is the second largest city in Armenia. It is as much semi-desert as it is mountain meadow or high alpine.
