Meserete Kristos Church
Meserete Kristos Church is a Mennonite denomination in Ethiopia and Eritrea (P'ent'ay/Evangelical). It is a member of the Mennonite World Conference. The headquarters are in Addis Ababa. History The Church has its origins in an American mission of the Lancaster Mennonite Conference in the 1940s. The first church was founded in 1951 in Addis Ababa. ''Meserete Kristos Church'' (meaning "Christ is the foundation Church", based on I Cor. 3:11) was officially founded in 1959. According to a census published in 2022, it had 1,160 churches and 370,909 baptized members. In 2005, Amnesty International reported the church experienced religious persecution in Eritrea, where it had been present for decades. Mennonite
Mennonites are a group of Anabaptism, Anabaptist Christianity, Christian communities tracing their roots to the epoch of the Radical Reformation. The name ''Mennonites'' is derived from the cleric Menno Simons (1496–1561) of Friesland, part of the Habsburg Netherlands within the Holy Roman Empire, present day Netherlands. P'ent'ay
P'ent'ay (from Geʽez: ) is an originally Amharic– Tigrinya language term for Pentecostal Christians. Today, the term refers to all Evangelical Protestant denominations and organisations in Ethiopian and Eritrean societies. Alternative terms include Ethiopian–Eritrean Evangelicalism or the Ethiopian–Eritrean Evangelical Church. Lancaster Mennonite Conference (LMC) is a historic body of Mennonite churches mainly concentrated in the Mid-Atlantic region of the United States. Bishoftu
Bishoftu (; ) is a town in central Ethiopia. Located in the East Shewa Zone of the Oromia Region, it sits at an elevation of 1,920 metres (6,300 ft). It was formerly known as Debre Zeyit (). The town serves as the primary airbase of the Ethiopian Air Force. Bishoftu is located southeast of Addis Ababa along its route 4 highway. It is a resort town, known for its several lakes. Christianity in Ethiopia is the country's largest religion with members making up 68% of the population. Christianity in Ethiopia dates back to the ancient Kingdom of Aksum, when the Ezana of Aksum, King Ezana first adopted the faith in the 4th century AD. Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online
The Global Anabaptist Mennonite Encyclopedia Online (GAMEO) is an online encyclopedia of topics relating to Mennonites and Anabaptism. The mission of the project is to provide free, reliable, English-language information on Anabaptist-related topics. GAMEO was started in 1996 as the Canadian Mennonite Encyclopedia Online by the Mennonite Historical Society of Canada. In 2005 the project was renamed to its current title and the scope expanded with the additional partnership of the Mennonite Brethren Historical Commission and the Mennonite Church USA Archives.
