"Merry Christmas, Charlie Manson!" is the sixteenth episode of the second season of the American animated television series ''South Park''. The 29th episode of the series overall it originally aired on Comedy Central in the United States on December 9, 1998. The episode was written by series co-creator Trey Parker along with Nancy M. Pimental and directed by Eric Stough. In the episode, the boys go to Cartman's grandma's house in Nebraska for the holidays but Stan was told by his parents that he cannot go because it’s far away from South Park. Stan challenges their authority and goes anyway. Meanwhile Cartman's Uncle Howard and his friend Charlie Manson bust out of prison and cause mayhem and mischief. Plot Stan asks his parents for permission to see Cartman's grandma in Nebraska for the holidays but they refuse because this place is far away from South Park. "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is an English Christmas carol that first appeared in 1739 in the collection ''Hymns and Sacred Poems''. The carol, based on , tells of an angelic chorus singing praises to God. As it is known in the modern era, it features lyrical contributions from Charles Wesley and George Whitefield, two of the founding ministers of Methodism, with music adapted from " Vaterland, in deinen Gauen" by Felix Mendelssohn. Wesley, who had written the original version as "Hymn for Christmas-Day," had requested and received slow and solemn music for his lyrics, which has since largely been discarded. Eric Stough
Eric "Butters" Stough (born July 31, 1972) is an American animator and producer. He is best known as the animation director and a producer on the television series '' South Park''. Born in Evergreen, Colorado, Stough attended the University of Colorado at Boulder and graduated in 1995 with a degree in film. A longtime friend of Trey Parker, he has worked with him and Matt Stone on most of their projects, including ''South Park'', '' South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut'', '' Orgazmo'', '' Team America: World Police'' and the Broadway musical '' The Book of Mormon''.
