Mernda
Mernda is a suburb of Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, 26 km north-east of Melbourne's central business district, located within the City of Whittlesea local government area. Mernda recorded a population of 23,369 at the 2021 census. History The first structure by European settlers was built in 1841 and bore the title of The Bridge Inn. That same year a small flour mill was built on the Plenty River. These town enterprises provided the nucleus of a village which was initially known as Morang. The Post Office opened on 19 February 1875 as Yan Yean. Situated near the Yan Yean Reservoir and Yan Yean, the popularity of the region for recreation led Morang citizens to press for a name change. This was granted and from 1893 to 1913 the township was known as South Yan Yean. In 1913 the locality was renamed ''Mernda''. The post office and the railway station were also renamed. Mernda railway station is a commuter railway station and the terminus of the Mernda line, part of the Melbourne railway network. It serves the north-eastern Melbourne suburb of Mernda in Victoria, Australia. Mernda is an elevated premium station, featuring an island platform with two faces. The original station opened on 23 December 1889. The station reopened on 26 August 2018 along with the duplication of track between South Morang and Mernda. History The original Mernda station opened on 23 December 1889, when the railway line from Epping was extended to Whittlesea. Doreen, Victoria
Doreen is a suburb in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, north-east of Melbourne's Central Business District, located within the City of Whittlesea and Shire of Nillumbik local government areas. Doreen recorded a population of 27,122 at the 2021 census. Patrick Reid settled the area in 1844, calling it "Hazel Glen". The Post Office opened on 8 December 1870 as Hazelglen, and was renamed Doreen in 1895. The area has a community hall and a Country Fire Authority fire station. History Doreen was initially established by Europeans in the year 1844. One of these early settlers was Patrick Reid. Reid had a holding over the land, calling the area "Hazel Glen".
