Mermithidae
Mermithidae is a family of nematode worms that are endoparasites in arthropods. As early as 1877, Mermithidae was listed as one of nine subdivisions of the Nematoidea. Mermithidae are confused with the horsehair worms of the phylum Nematomorpha that have a similar life history and appearance. Mermithids are parasites, mainly of arthropods. Most are known from insects, but some are recorded from spiders, scorpions and crustaceans. A few are known to parasitize earthworms, leeches and molluscs, and a specimen is known from a spider preserved in Baltic amber. At least 25 species are known to parasitize mosquito larvae, making them of considerable interest in biological control. A species, probably ''Pheromermis vesparum'', was recorded from the invasive Vespa velutina, Asian hornet (''Vespa velutina'') in France. The parasite was considered to be a member of the local fauna which had adapted to a new host (biology), host. However, the authors concluded that the mermithid could not ... Nematomorpha
Nematomorpha (sometimes called Gordiacea, and commonly known as horsehair worms, hairsnakes, or Gordian worms) are a phylum of parasitoid animals superficially similar to nematode worms in morphology, hence the name. Most species range in size from , reaching in extreme cases, and in diameter. Horsehair worms can be discovered in damp areas, such as watering troughs, swimming pools, streams, puddles, and cisterns. The adult worms are free-living, but the larvae are parasitic on arthropods, such as beetles, cockroaches, mantises, orthopterans, and crustaceans. About 351 freshwater species are known and a conservative estimate suggests that there may be about 2000 freshwater species worldwide. The name "Gordian" stems from the legendary Gordian knot. This relates to the fact that nematomorphs often coil themselves in tight balls that resemble knots. Description and biology Nematomorphs possess an external cuticle without cilia. Internally, they have only longitudinal muscle and ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Culicoides Variipennis
''Culicoides variipennis'' is a long biting midge. It is a part of the subgenus ''Monoculicoides'' and has many subspecies. Found in North America, ''C. variipennis'' transmits Bluetongue virus, African horse sickness virus, akabane virus, and epizootic hemorrhagic disease. Anatomy ''Culicoides variipennis'' is less than long, which makes it difficult to keep from livestock. The wings of ''C. variipennis'' are spotted and narrow with few veins; the wings fold over the abdomen while the ''C. variipennis'' is at rest. The max flight range for male ''C. variipennis'' is and for females , while the mean flight range is . Flight activity is dependent on the light intensity and temperature; most flight, and thus most bites, occur around dawn and dusk. A distinction between male and female ''C. variipennis'' is that females have different mouthparts that allow them to blood feed. Life cycle The life cycle of ''C. variipennis'' is from half a year to three years. The larva, found t ... Culex Pipiens
''Culex pipiens'' is a species of mosquito commonly referred to as the common house mosquito or northern house mosquito. Native to Africa, Asia and Europe, it is now widely distributed in temperate regions on every continent except Antarctica and is one of the most common mosquitoes found in human habitats in temperate parts of the northern hemisphere. A major vector of some viruses, it can be abundant in cities, especially those with poor wastewater management. It is the most common mosquito to the northern regions of the US. ''Culex pipiens'' is the type species for the genus ''Culex''. ''Culex pipiens'' includes two morphologically indistinguishable forms, ''Culex pipiens'' form ''pipiens'' and ''Culex pipiens'' form ''molestus'.'' Despite their morphological similarity, the two forms exhibit striking ecological and behavioral differences. Form ''pipiens'' lives above ground and primarily feeds on birds. Form ''molestus,'' also known as the London Underground mosquito, can li ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Armadillidium Vulgare
''Armadillidium vulgare'', the common pill-bug, common pill woodlouse, roly-poly, slater, doodle bug, or carpenter, is a widespread European species of woodlouse. It is the most extensively investigated terrestrial isopod species. It is native to Mediterranean Europe, but as an introduced species they have become naturalized in almost all suitable ecosystems. They are kept as pets by hobbyists for their wide range of possible color variations. Description ''Armadillidium vulgare'' may reach a length of , and is capable of rolling into a ball when disturbed; this ability, along with its general appearance, gives it the name ''pill-bug'' and also creates the potential for confusion with pill millipedes such as '' Glomeris marginata''. It can be distinguished from '' Armadillidium nasatum'' and '' Armadillidium depressum'' by the gap that ''A. nasatum'' and ''A. depressum'' leave when rolling into a ball; ''A. vulgare'' does not leave such a gap. Porcellio Scaber
''Porcellio scaber'' (otherwise known as the common rough woodlouse or simply rough woodlouse), is a species of woodlouse native to Europe but with a cosmopolitan distribution. They are often found in large numbers in most regions, with many species (shrews, centipedes, toads, spiders and even some birds) preying on them. Taxonomy One subspecies, ''Porcellio scaber lusitanus'', is currently recognized. Two other subspecies were historically deemed valid but are no longer recognized. ''P. s. americanus'', described in 1932, was considered endemic in the Americas. ''P. s. japonicus'' was described in 1928 and believed to be endemic to Japan. Both subspecies were synonymized with the Subspecies#Nominotypical subspecies and subspecies autonyms, nominate in 2020. Distribution ''Porcellio scaber'' is found across Central Europe, Central and Western Europe. In the United Kingdom, it is one of the "big five" species of woodlice. It has also colonised North America, South Africa and ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |

Isopoda
Isopoda is an order of crustaceans. Members of this group are called isopods and include both aquatic species and terrestrial species such as woodlice. All have rigid, segmented exoskeletons, two pairs of antennae, seven pairs of jointed limbs on the thorax, and five pairs of branching appendages on the abdomen that are used in respiration. Females brood their young in a pouch under their thorax called the marsupium. Isopods have various feeding methods: some eat dead or decaying plant and animal matter, others are grazers or filter feeders, a few are predators, and some are internal or external parasites, mostly of fish. Aquatic species mostly live on the seabed or the bottom of freshwater bodies of water, but some taxa can swim for short distance. Terrestrial forms move around by crawling and tend to be found in cool, moist places. Some species are able to roll themselves into a ball as a defense mechanism or to conserve moisture like species in the family Armadilli ...
