Mercina Claesen
Mercina Claesen (born 27 March, 2002 in Genk) is a Belgian politician of the Vlaams Belang party. She has been a member of the Flemish Parliament since 2024 representing the Limburg constituency. Biography Claesen was born in Genk and now lives in Munsterbilzen. She completed a bachelor's and then a master's degree in social policy at KU Leuven. During her studies she was active in the Flemish nationalist Nationalistische Studentenvereniging group. She also worked part-time as a special needs teacher. Claesen became active in the Vlaams Belang Jongeren (VBJ) as a teenager and has been the spokesperson and provincial coordinator of VBJ in Limburg since 2022. During the 2024 Belgian regional elections, she was elected to the Flemish Parliament and is the baby of the house Baby of the House is the unofficial title given to the youngest member of a parliamentary house. 2024 Belgian Regional Elections
The 2024 Belgian regional elections were held on Sunday 9 June, the same day as the 2024 European Parliament election as well as the Belgian federal election. In the regional elections, new representatives are chosen for the Flemish Parliament, Walloon Parliament, Brussels Parliament and the Parliament of the German-speaking Community. The Parliament of the French Community is composed of all elected members of the Walloon Parliament (German-speaking members are replaced) and 19 of the French-speaking members of the Brussels Parliament. ''Vlaams Belang Jongeren'' (VBJ; Dutch for "Flemish Interest Youth") is the youth wing of the Vlaams Belang party. Until the conviction of the Vlaams Blok in 2004, the organisation was called Vlaams Blok Jongeren. When the party changed its name, so did the youth wing. The current chairman of VBJ is Filip Brusselmans, he replaced Bart Claes in 2020. VBJ is a Flemish nationalist and conservative organisation that aims to group youth who want to contribute to the political program of Vlaams Belang. It claims to defend European values and culture. Bilzen () is a former municipality and city located in the Belgian province of Limburg. In 2021, Bilzen had a total population of 32,536. The total area is 75.90 km2 which gives a population density of 426 inhabitants per km2.
