Merchant Marine Defense Bar
The Merchant Marine Defense Medal (Bar) is a decoration of the United States Merchant Marine. The decoration was established by an Act of Congress on August 14, 1944. Conditions The decoration is awarded to members of the Merchant Marine who served aboard United States merchant ships between September 8, 1939 and December 7, 1941. Design Prior to 1992, the Merchant Marine Defense Medal was a ribbon-only decoration; otherwise known as the Merchant Marine Defense Bar. On May 19, 1992, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the availability of new medals for civilian merchant seamen, in recognition of their service in World War II, Korea and Vietnam. The medals are being issued to supplement war zone ribbon bars previously awarded to civilian mariners who supported the nation's armed forces in these wars. United States Maritime Administration
The United States Maritime Administration (MARAD) is an agency of the United States Department of Transportation. MARAD administers financial programs to develop, promote, and operate the U.S. Maritime Service and the U.S. Merchant Marine. Determining services and routes necessary to develop and maintain American foreign commerce and requirements of ships necessary to provide adequate service on such routes. The Merchant Marine Combat Bar is a decoration of the United States Merchant Marine. The decoration was established by an Act of Congress on 10 May 1943. Conditions The decoration is awarded to members of the Merchant Marine who served on a ship when it was attacked or damaged by an enemy or an instrument of war, such as a mine during the Second World War. This award is a ribbon bar only. Further prescribed is the issuance a silver star to be attached to such bar to seamen who are forced to abandon ship when it is so attacked or damaged. For each additional abandonment, an additional star is attached. It is no longer awarded.
