Mercedes Narcisse
Mercedes Narcisse (born April 26, 1965) is a Haitian American nurse and Democratic politician from New York City currently serving as the New York City Council Member representing Brooklyn's 46th City Council District covering the neighborhoods of Bergen Beach, Canarsie, Flatlands, Georgetown, Gerritsen Beach, Marine Park, Mill Basin, Mill Island, Sheepshead Bay in southeastern Brooklyn. Early life Narcisse was born in Saint-Marc, Haiti, and was raised by her grandmother. When she was 17 years old, Narcisse moved to Brooklyn to live with her father, and attended Samuel J. Tilden High School despite initially not knowing any English. She then graduated from the New York City College of Technology, receiving a degree in nursing. New York's 17th State Senate district is one of 63 districts in the New York State Senate. It has been represented by Democrat Simcha Felder since 2013, following his defeat of incumbent Republican David Storobin in 2012. Since his first election, Felder has run on both the Democratic and Republican party lines and has alternately caucused with both parties; since July 2019, he has been a member of the Democratic caucus. Geography District 17 is located in Southern and Southwestern Brooklyn, including some or all of the neighborhoods of Borough Park, Midwood, Sunset Park, Kensington, Bensonhurst, and Gravesend. Jumaane D. Williams ( ; born May 11, 1976) is an American activist and politician who has served as the New York City Public Advocate since 2019. He is a former member of the New York City Council from the 45th district, which includes East Flatbush, Flatbush, Flatlands, Marine Park, and Midwood in Brooklyn. A member of the Democratic Party and a self-described democratic socialist, Williams served as Deputy Leader of the city council and chair of the Task Force on City Workforce Equity. A candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New York in 2018, he lost to incumbent Kathy Hochul. Williams was elected New York City Public Advocate in the 2019 special election to complete the term of Letitia James, who resigned to become Attorney General of New York. The office of New York City Public Advocate (President of the City Council) is a citywide elected position in New York City, which is first in line to succeed the mayor. The office serves as a direct link between the electorate and city government, effectively acting as an ombudsman, or watchdog, for New Yorkers. The 2021 New York City Council election were held on November 2, 2021. The primary elections were held on June 22, 2021. There were several special elections for seats vacated in 2020 and early 2021; these special elections were the first to use ranked-choice voting in city council elections after it was approved by a ballot question in 2019. Due to redistricting after the 2020 Census, candidates also ran for two-year terms instead of four-year terms for the first time, stemming from the New York City Charter overhaul in 1989. Four-year terms will resume in the 2025 election after another two-year election in 2023. John Lasarus Williams (29 October 1924 – 15 June 2004), known as John L, was a Welsh nationalist activist.
