Mercedes Blasco
Mercedes Blasco (4 September 1867 – 12 April 1961), pseudonym of Conceição Vitória Marques, was a popular Portuguese actor in operettas and variety shows. She was also a writer, being the first Portuguese actress to write her memoirs, a teacher, translator and journalist, as well as a volunteer nurse in World War I. Early life Mercedes Blasco was born on 4 September 1867 (some sources say 1870) in the mining community of Sao Domingos Mine, Mina de S. Domingos, located in the Alentejo region of Portugal, from where her mother's family came. When she was a few months old her family moved to Huelva in Spain, where her father was a train driver and where they lived until she was seven, when the family moved to the city of Porto in Portugal. São Domingos Mine
The São Domingos Mine is a deserted open-pit mine in Corte do Pinto, Mértola municipality, Alentejo region, Portugal. This site is one of the volcanogenic massive sulfide ore deposits in the Iberian Pyrite Belt, which extends from the southern Portugal into Spain. It was the first place in Portugal to have electric lighting. History The Romans mined in the São Domingos area for gold and silver for about 400 years. Mining stopped here when the Romans left. In 1854 Nicolau Biava, an Italian miner from Piedmont, Italy, staked a claim to the mine; ownership then passed to a French syndicate. In 1855 mining was resumed, as the international demand for copper grew during the Industrial Revolution. In 1859 the mining concession was leased for 50 years to an English mining company, Mason and Barry, run by Sir Francis Barry, 1st Baronet and his brother-in-law James Mason, because of their industrial mining expertise. ''O Século'' (meaning ''The Century'' in English) was a Portuguese daily newspaper published in Lisbon, Portugal, from 1881 to 1977. History and profile ''O Século'' was first published on 4 January 1881. The founder was Sebastião de Magalhães Lima, who had studied law at the University of Coimbra.
