Mercedes Baptista
Mercedes Ignácia da Silva Krieger, known as Mercedes Batista or Mercedes Baptista (20 May, 1921 — 19 August, 2014) was a Brazilian ballet dancer and choreographer, the first black woman to join Theatro Municipal (Rio de Janeiro), Theatro Municipal do Rio de Janeiro's corps de ballet. Baptista was responsible for the creation of the Afro-Brazilian ballet, inspired by the candomblé ''terreiros'', elaborating a codification and vocabulary proper for these dances. Life Mercedes Batista was born in Campos dos Goytacazes. Campos Dos Goytacazes
Campos dos Goytacazes () is a city located in the northern region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil, with a population of 483,540 inhabitants. It is the largest city in Rio de Janeiro (state) outside of the Greater Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area. History Colonization of the area started in the 16th century, and the village of São Salvador de Campos de Goytacazes was founded on May 29, 1677. Grêmio Recreativo Escola de Samba Unidos de Vila Isabel is a samba school in Rio de Janeiro. It was thrice champion of the Special Group of the Rio Carnival and is currently headquartered in Boulevard 28 de Setembro in the Vila Isabel neighbourhood. After winning the 1988 and 2006 carnival, the Unidos de Vila Isabel samba school was crowned the winner of the 2013 Rio Carnival for its attractive and colourful parade highlighting rural life and the customs of the Brazilian interior.
