Mercedes-AMG GmbH, commonly known as AMG (Aufrecht, Melcher, Großaspach), is the high-performance subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-Benz AG. AMG independently hires engineers and contracts with manufacturers to customize Mercedes-Benz AMG vehicles. The company has its headquarters in Affalterbach, Baden-Württemberg, Germany. AMG was originally an independent engineering firm specializing in performance improvements for Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Hans Werner Aufrecht (born 28 December 1938 in Großaspach, Germany) was in 1967 along with Erhard Melcher one of the founders of AMG Engine Production and Development, a current subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. When the company and the name "AMG" was acquired by Mercedes-Benz in the late 1990s, he used his initials for the name of Mercedes' official racing team, HWA Team. HWA Team
HWA Team, also known as HWA RACELAB, is the auto racing team of HWA AG, a German company based in Affalterbach, that also develops and builds vehicles and components for Mercedes-AMG race cars. It is named after founder Hans-Werner Aufrecht. History HWA was responsible for managing the AMG Mercedes team in the Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters (DTM). HWA AG was founded in 1999, and takes its name from Hans-Werner Aufrecht, who established AMG in 1967. Towards the end of 1998 Aufrecht sold a majority interest in AMG to DaimlerChrysler AG. Affalterbach
Affalterbach is a municipality in the Ludwigsburg district in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. History Affalterbach became a possession of the County of Württemberg in 1322 and was placed under the jurisdiction of Marbach am Neckar. As it sat on the important road from Heilbronn to Ulm, the village was for a time abandoned. In 1938, was dissolved and replaced with , to which Affalterbach was assigned. As part of the , that district too was dissolved and replaced with the new district of Ludwigsburg. Erhard Melcher
Erhard Melcher (born 1. January 1940) is a German engineer who was one of the founders of AMG Engine Production and Development, a current subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz. Melcher began his career at Daimler in the 1960s working for their development department. Following Mercedes Benzes halt of racing activities Melcher and Hans-Werner Aufrecht founded AMG. When Aufrecht moved AMG to larger premises in Affalterbach in 1971, Melcher left the company to work independently at his new company MKB Manufaktur in Burgstall.
